Part 1 will be on Headliners on FoxFooty next Wednesday 23rd Aug. 9pm.

Can't promise anything but I'll try and record it and upload it 'you know where' for those who miss it.

For all our younger members here Mots was one of the main inspirations for our '87 flag victory.

Thanks for the heads up. While sad, this will be a great piece I'm sure. The Headliners episodes I've remembered to watch, have been pretty good I reckon. I hope they repeat a lot of them over the summer.

For some background, there's a nice thread about Mots in the Legends Room on TBV.

Thanks budzy, just booked it in to record.

Sad Carlton story, but should be good viewing. The 'Headliners' shows that I have seen have been very well researched and IMO probably better than any AFL journalism you would see on any of the free to air channels.

The one on the move of South Melb to Sydney was excellent.

Thanks for the heads up guys.......

Motts is the reason I follow the blues. My dad played for Sturt forever ago and Motts was my favorite player when dad used to take me down to Unley and watch the Double Blues play.

He moved to Melbourne one year before I did.

My old man will be stoked to see this.

Those who went to the guernsey presentation last year will remember the speech he gave.

I was barely born when Motley was playing, but just hearing him talk about what it was like to play for Carlton back in his day, you knew it meant a shit load to him and that he was forever grateful for the opportunity he was given.

Got that speech on tape as well.

I loved the way Peter Motley played. When he arrived with Kernahan, Bradley and Dorotich he was the one I'd liked to watch the most.

1985/86 must go down as one of the best off-seasons of any club ever (closely followed by the Spalding/Williams off-season). Maybe only Sydney's Neagle, Healy, Williams etc is in the same league.

Imagine if we'd snared Platten at the same time (which we nearly did). Not only would that have significantly boosted us it would have taken him away from our arch-rival of the time and possibly been the difference between them winning in 1986 & 1988 and someone else (read us).

Was priveldged enough to watch him play and many rated him equal to if not better than the crop of Braddles etc. A sad yet inspiring story of how to overcome obstacles.

He is simply a champion bloke

Took some time to find his feet in 86, but the last game he ever played before the tragic accident, against the Swans at the SCG was sublime, he was going to be an out and out champion.

Played a great game that night.
As well I think it was against the bulldogs at the kennel he was brilliant.
Pity him and Braddles were drag racing that night home from training.

He was pure poetry in motion.

If anybody gets the chance to meet him, you can't be anything but impressed with his attitude and good humour.

I still feel we were robbed of a 250 game player when he went down.

my old coach used to tell me motley was the best out of the 3 SA'ans to come that year out of bradley and kernahan. i find this pretty hard to believe as kernahan and bradley are arguably among the greatest 5 or 6 players this club has ever seen, can anyone shed any light on this theory?

He was probably behind the other two when he arrived but by the time of his accident I reckon he looked the most "natural" footballer of the three.

I'm not sure it's too easy to split players when they're that good because they offer different things. How do you compare Bradley streaking down the wing taking 5 bounces with Kernahan pulling in a pack mark at a crucial moment and slotting a goal?

With that in mind I wouldn't be putting him above or below them but I have little doubt that he would be held in similar esteem had he had a full career.

Mptts drew the eye - was he going to be better - no. Stcisk and Braddles were exceptional footballers.

As good? I thought so

but the thing was like Jezza as a kid with Motts you always found yourself watching him even if the ball was a mile away.

I was lucky enough to see all three of Motley, Bradley and Kernahan while I was growing up in SA, and I would have to say that Motley was the most naturally gifted footballer out of the bunch. Poetry in motion. Would he have gone on to be better than Bradley and Kernahan? I actually think that he would have, but unfortunately we will never know. Great bloke though.

I agree Mots was on the verge of being a beauty. It's funny how you relate things. I always think of Paul "Molly" Meldrum whenever Mots is mentioned.

Molly was on fire in the early part of '87 (polled 5 BOG votes in the Brownlow in the first 8 rounds) but as a passenger in Bradley's car witnessed the accident and it impacted on him so much that his season went off the rails big time.

Molly wasn't the same after that accident.
His first 8 rounds of the 87 seasons was almost as good as some of koutas magic in 2000
