Post subject:  List Breakdown

Here is a breakdown of age of our current list.
Age as of 01 Apr 2007( Start of 2007 Season ).

23 YEARS OF AGE AND YOUNGER:
Raso 19
Edwardes 19
Bower 19
Murphy 19
Kennedy 19
Flynt 19
Jackson 19
Betts 20
Harlett 20
Walker 20
Russell 20
Blackwell 20
Bentick 21
A O Hailpin 21
Simpson 22
Fisher 22
Thornton 23
Carrazzo 23
Davies 23

24-27 YEARS OF AGE:
McClaren 24
S O Hailpin 24
Deluca 24
Waite 24
Bannister 24
Wiggins 24
Bryan 25
Teague 25
Houlihan 25
Fevola 26
Scotland 26
Whitnall 27
Saddington 27
Stevens 27

28 YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER:
Lappin 31
Koutoufides 32

Very young list and definately the youngest in the league.
Looking at the list I definatley think our youth is as good as most sides going around, but where we full away is the middle tear (24-27 age bracket).
Apart from Stevens, Scotland, Fev & Whitnall there isn't much there.
I cannot see improvement coming from the other 24-27 age bracket players which unfortunately puts alot of pressure on the younger guys to
fasten then development. This is where the good sides have an advantage over the botton sides.
Poor recruiting and the trading away of draft picks in the late nineties and early 00 is the cause of this and obviously the draft penalties of 2002/03
just further deepend the woes.
Having said that I think there is light at the end of the tunnel and I am confident that we are definately on the right track now.
The delistings to date have been spot on with no surprises there.

GO BLUES!!!

One More To Go Possibly Chris Bryan, as his 2 his is up and only played a handfull of games. I don't think there will be much more or any after 1 delisted ,2 would be definite.

Kouta,Lappin,Hartlett,Saddington,Deluca,Davies,Teague,Raso,Mclaren and Bannister will be on the next list for next year unless they have a great year

The 24-27 does not make for good reading!

This is why I think we are still a fair way of being really competitive (top 4) as you need your best players in this category. The scary thing is our 23 and younger category is largely bottom aged. Great for the long term future, but short term is a different story. Hope I am wrong though!

Teague, Saddington, Deluca, Bryan and McLaren IMO drag this list down.

The rest are a combination of superstars, talented or show strong potential.

Not quite...

This makes for some interesting reading. Here are the ages of lists in the competition, from the youngest, as at 30 March 2006, including rookies...

Hawthorn - 22 years 151 days
Sydney - 22 years 207 days (yep, frightening)
Carlton - 22 years 260 days
Geelong - 22 years 298 days
Essendon* - 22 years 305 days
Richmond - 22 years 313 days
Collingwood - 22 years 349 days
West Coast - 23 years 71 days
Port - 23 years 119 days
North - 23 years 134 days
Dogs - 23 years 138 days
Melbourne - 23 years 141 days
Fremantle - 23 years 202 days
St Kilda - 23 years 231 days
Adelaide - 23 years 343 days
Brisbane - 23 years 343 days (will come down considerably next year)

So ours isn't the youngest in the league, and we are a fair way behind Sydney (although our delistings will bring our average age down). Interesting how Pagan keeps going on about how we have the youngest list int he competition, and how many pre-seasons our boys are behind the league leaders, like Sydney.

Setanta, 24. Gee time flies a wee bit quickly. A little pressure would be on him this year. A good amount of improvement needs to be shown. Then again, over the last 4 years he has to be one of the most improved players in the competition.

I'd agree on one more. To me Davies would be the best candidate as he has been given enough time. Bryan we need for the ruck as we have next to nothing especially if we are looking to offload Deluca and McLaren the following year. One of them has to work. The other choice for delisting would be Saddington if his injuries are career threatening.

I somehow believe that one or two from this list will last beyond next year...

I really can't see him staying,he is to short as a ruckmen, the only reason i think Davies would be kept is because he missed the whole season,Ratten must have a little influence as a coach,he would think he may turn him around as he is only 23 and Davies has played some good games, not a lot but he has,but some people forget, because he misses easy goals.

Deluca and Mclaren will do most of the ruck this year with any guy drafted who has played and possibly Ohalipin,Saddington and maybe another tall will have a go.

How does our list compare to Sydney's in terms of age/games played? Sydney may have a younger list in raw terms, but they are in the enviable position of being able to cosset their youngest players for quite some time before dropping them in the deep fryer.

They also have about 10 rookies on their list (I think), which helps to bring the average age down on the list.

Sydney are allowed to have 9 rookie list players, that is why their average is so low.

It's not how old you are, it's how many games you have played at the highest level that counts. Come 2007, we would have to be least experienced easily.

We have 8 players with 100+ games (including Saddington). Sydney have 13.

Yep, fair point re Sydney's NINE (unbelievable) rookies and games played. So, here goes...

Average games played per club as at 30 March 2006 (before this season):

Hawthorn 50
Carlton 52
Geelong 55
Sydney 58
Richmond 60
Port 63
Essendon* 64
North 64
West Coast 65
Fremantle 66
Melbourne 68
Dogs 68
Collingwood 70
St Kilda 70
Adelaide 72
Brisbane 72 (strange, they have exactly the same average age too. Again, Brisbane's will drop loads for next year)

Will be interesting to compare the movements of both Carlton and Hawthorn over the next 5 years.

Something to do with fact the Swans have 8 rookie listed players vs 4-5 for most other clubs, of course bringing their average age down quite considerably
