TalkingCarlton :: View topic - Cost cuts to the Football Department

Spoke to a close reliable Carlton friend, who attends sessions with our now former club physio, and he's advised that he (the physio) was recently stood down as the club cited a more cost effective model to adopt when it came to physiotherapy, ie a centralised medical group in the Melbourne CBD to undertake this task on behalf of the club.

I see Dr Larkins there (Melb Sports Medicine Centre) and I have been seeing Carlton Players in the waiting rooms there for years. I remember sitting a few seats up from Glen Bowyer in the waiting rooms a couple of years ago. Some of the Physio rooms are full of signed Carlton memorabilia obviously given to the doctors etc. There's also loads of Nth Melb stuff. The physio that recently set the broken bones in my hand was one of the Nth Melb physios.

I'm sure Ben Baresi had replaced Phil a couple of years ago - Ben also works from the same clinic (Mid Town Medical Centre at 250 Collins St)....
Wangers please confirm whether the Mid Town arrangement has been replaced. I'm not sure it has....

Interesting that there is always another version to some stories.

The version I heard was that CFC will retain the same number of Physio's (3) as always. The only difference being that CFC have let one go so that another can be bought into the Club from the same work location as the remaining 2. In that way all 3 will be under the same roof.

The selection process is currently ongoing for the new 3rd physio. In the mean time the other 2 continue to provide the same service to CFC as before. Apparently there was only ever 1 physio at the club each morning to see the players. After the morning treatment the players would go into the city clinic for further treatment if/when required.

When you hear it that way it seems to make perfect sense.

He mentioned that feedback from the players that were being treated by him was that of great disappointment and anger towards the decision. I'm all for cost cutting, particularly in administration and process improvement, but at the expense of the football department and player welfare??? Poor form IMHO.

My understanding that this was already the case (Mid-Town Medical Clinic) who had provided Medical Services (Dr Phil Perlstein - Carlton CLub Doctor) and Physio Services: (Simon Nelson - Carlton Club Physio) for many years - teriffic operators both of them. Very disappointed if they have been taken off the case due to cost cutting exercises.

If true, that's not an ideal situation. The thing with physio, is that when you're undergoing it, it can be pretty intensive: 2 sessions a day, every day. If you can't have that at the club, but have to traipse into the CBD, then back to the club, then back to the CBD... IS THERE ANY WAY WE CAN FAST-TRACK THE PP REDEVELOPMENT??? Geez, we've fallen sooooo far behind most other clubs...

Harry had been the North Melbourne Club Doctor for many years and he actually introduced Phillip Perlstein to Carlton who became Carlton's Club Doctor, the physios from this practice also became the Club Physios of North and Carlton respectively. Ironically Harry was a mad keen Carlton Supporter - but by a strange twist (because Carlton approached him too late to be CLub Doctor) he became Norths Club Doctor and follows them. But the point is that this medical centre has been a providing first rate medical advice and treatment to both North and Carlton for many years - and I dare say bulk billed both North and Carlton players anyway. Unless the alternative medical system that Carlton are going to implement is demonstrably better than what they are moving from then I would say its a BIG mistake.

It was Harry who put him on the radar for the job as CEO of the AFLPA - otherwise "The Spew" would never have been in the race for it.

Regards Cazzesman This could be the case - I gotta admit that was not mentioned by my 'sauce', and if the physio was the one that came in each morning to the club and this no longer happens, you could understand why the players would be somewhat inconvenienced to have to make a trip into the city when a morning treatment at the club would have been waiting. I guess it makes little difference to those that get more than 1 treatment a day by the physio. Thanks for the info Caz.
