Carlton Football Club's financial woes explored http://www.monash.edu.au/news/newsline/story/1017 Quote: "In the first hundred years of VFL/AFL competition, Carlton was the game's most successful and financially strong club," says Associate Professor Frost.
"Yet in 2006, Carlton was obliged to seek financial assistance from the AFL to enable the club to trade legally for the rest of the season. "For most observers, Carlton's decline is attributable to a series of decisions made by the administration of John Elliott, who was club president from 1983 to 2002," he says. While acknowledging the negative impact of those decisions, Associate Professor Frost also argues that the club's decline coincided with a decisive shift in the economic and organisational structure of Australian Rules Football from a sport in which several leagues competed for players and revenue, to one built around a more monopolistic, nationwide competition. |

I knew Lionel Frost, he was a Lecturer in Economic History at La Trobe Uni in the early 90's. I have to get around to contacting him about the Blueseum one of these days. |

Just so you know, Lionel Frost has written The Old Dark Navy Blues, a great history of the CFC, which unfortunately is now out of print. (I happen to have a new copy of it having hunted it down a few years ago). Anyway, my point being - the guy is no bunny. If any of you get a chance, find the book in a library and check it out. And he definitely has lots of source material for the Blueseum........ |

Lionel Frost should be treated with the utmost respect. He wrote a brilliant book on the history of the Carlton Football Club that is (excluding Jim Main's and Russell Holmesby's book - 100 greatest players) the best thing I have read on Carlton. |
