We (as always) had very high hopes for these new Carlton players in December 2003. Things don't always work out for the best; no matter how much effort is put in to a project but...... these guys wore (and some still wear) the famous Carlton jumper. ![]() |

We were gifted (or cursed) Walker and Stevens. Scotto was a good get. The rest was all speculative re-hashing and mature pickups. Shame about Cory. |

Very few of the recycled players were likely to go on to be long term players. |

I've still got high hopes for Setanta....huge, raw talent improving all the time. When I found that article/pic; I was struck by the optimism in all of the faces. We did do better than expected in 2004; but it was perhaps predictably (in hindsight) shortlived, unfortunately. We did so well in the past with recycled players such as Glenn Manton, Matty Hogg, Dean Rice, Justin Madden and Matt Clape to name a few off the top of my head.... it can work. |

Rejects get rejected because they aint good enough. Its like that second marriage. Its ok for a while but after about a year you slip into old habits and you get the arse again. |

Funny....I don't know of a single second Marriage that hasn't been successful; and the five players I mentioned above, all played in a Premiership. |

A true stat warby. 2nd marriages have a worse strike rate than the U.S.A cricket team. |

4 players there have genuine talent - Stevens, Walker, Setanta and Scotland. 3 players there are/were serviceable - McGrath, Teague and Bannister Useless - Kenna, Harford, Clarke, Mott, Bowyer Underutilised - Johnson, Morrell Overutilized - Deluca |

There aren't too many drafts you come out of with that many quality players. There's another thread that shows over the last 10+ years we've averaged about 1 player per draft who has gone on to play decent and regular football, in 03' we took close to 4 maybe 5 players who will be a part of our next successful team and lost nothing in return for it. |

Aaron Davey, Shane Tuck and Ben Hudson were all "retreads" from the 2003 draft. Under the circumstances I don't think we had much choice than to go for retreads however we missed the good ones (Scotland excepted - bargain for pick #35). Big deal, we sacrificed picks #50 onwards in the 2003 draft. We have made far worse mistakes. |

I wouldn't however rate him as useless, sure Betts in better - but if Betts wasn't in our team (as I believe that you can't have more than one player of their type in a team) I would have hoped that Kenna was still with us... |
