Quote:
Essendon* has hatched a plan to throw a financial and social lifeline in the direction of Carlton by capitalising upon the fierce rivalry between the two clubs and creating another blockbuster fixture for the AFL calendar.

The Age believes that the Bombers' administration is working towards a potential multicultural theme game in August, the brainchild of Adam Ramanauskas, which would capitalise upon the strong ethnic links boasted by the two clubs, while pushing the AFL to ensure that the two clubs always play each other twice.

While Ramanauskas came up with the idea, it was coach Kevin Sheedy who has encouraged Carlton's involvement. Sheedy would not discuss details of the theme game, which Essendon* hopes can be scheduled for round 20 at the MCG this season, but confessed to have been looking towards one big-ticket solution to Carlton's woes for several months.

"If any club can step in to help Carlton, I reckon Essendon* can," Sheedy said yesterday. "It's time they started rolling with the big boys in Melbourne again. The next step will be for our club to sit down with their club and get this happening.

We don't need your Help Sheedy. I think he can smell the Carlton resurgence and wants his club to ride on our coat tails. How good of Kevin to have been thinking of how to get us back on track. 8)

The proposal sounds like a great idea and I don't care where it comes from.

Let's embrace this concept.

Agreed. Especially given it's Rama's idea.

Rama - the only good thing about the scum.

Pride comes before a fall. If Sheedy's idea can put $$ in the bank then I'm all for it. We should be playing blockbuster games, we hate the Scum. Regardless of where we are on the ladder I always want to smash those pr1cks. bring it on, 2 games against the scum per year would definately bring in the money.

Sheedy knows that, despite where we are on the ladder we are a better chance to fill the MCG than some of the teams that have been performing better on the pitch. In the end, winning games is OK but filling stadiums is what puts $$ in the bank. Why play Freo at the MCG when you could play us and fill the place!!!

I kind of agree, but it's a shame that we will still be seen to be reactionary to the concept.

Why aren't we making noises about Good Friday footy?

Why aren't we making noises about a Bluesday fixture?

Why aren't we looking to create our own annual guaranteed blockbuster?

cool idea!

We can play for the Cattogio Cup... a huge fro' shaped trophy.

But seriously - we could probably get the Grollo's involved in sponsoring the day - given both Daniel's interest in the club and the huge number of italians, greeks, etc who've worked for the Grollo's over the years, it could work out really well.

WE'RE CRAZY IF WE DON'T JUMP RIGHT ONTO THIS!

Very true CB, but hopefully proactivity is something that will emerge with the new administration, and with guys like Stephen Moulton, Zac Fried and Mark Harrison, there's a good chance it will happen.

Yes, you're right, and let's hope this does happen.

I believe the club has indeed enquired about Good Friday footy in the past, but why not get out on the front foot selling idea to the media? I want us to be seen as a proactive club once again.

It's gotta be the Madden cup.

In which case we'll have to settle for the Campo medal, and it can be awarded for the cleanest guernsey at the end of the game, or for diving excellence.

It is enshrined in stone by the AFL that Collingwood, Essendon* and Carlton play each other twice in the season.

Before the AFL [REDACTED] up ticketing at the MCG - there were regular crowds of 80,000 plus at all these games in the mid-90s.

We could play for the "World Cup".

just what we need, another themed game, someone show me how this will generate more income for Carlton. We already play the bumbers twice a year.

Just Sheedy wanting to big note himself at our expense. People aren't going to turn up in numbers just because the game has a 'multicultural' theme to it

And besides even though we have stunk it up on the field over the past 5 seasons - the little highlights have been those couple of wins we have still managed against the Scum.

If you theme it you can argue that it should be "stand-alone" scheduled - thus virtually guaranteeing 70k+.

I don't see how this is at our expense.

I agree with Kingkerna,

and the timing of the game is all wrong too. Round 20 is too late. Unless one or both teams are vying for the finals (which we know the Bummers will be this year because Hird has declared they'll be right up there  ) then it isn't going to draw more people just because it is a multicultural theme.

I'm all for us being involved in a blockbuster, but the fact the early season blockbuster games are tied up shows how reactive we've been. I guess it is better to embrace the multicultural idea than none at all - but hopefully we can start to work on some initiatives earlier in the season too.

please explain this to me, is a Friday night fixture stand alone? Because, for example, if we were to play it in round 20 on a Friday night and both teams are struggling, we will not draw 70,000.

Easter is the only time we can try and grab a day and make it our own, and I don't want that against Essendon*, I think this is just Sheedy trying to shore up another 'blockbuster' for himself. Give me Collingwood on good friday and I'd be happy.

why bother with the term multicultural just cut to the chase and call it the Wog Cup. Catering can alter the menu from pies chips and hot dogs to pasta, souvlaki and pizza I can guarantee at least 1000 of my relatives would attend
