Post subject:  Carlton nicknames over the years

Hoping posters could help me with something - I am interested in public / private nicknames for Carlton teams over the years, something akin to say BRadman's Invincibles in the Cricket. Hoping for some, preferably positive ones, say after our 1970's win, or 1995 premiership - what did the press call us? Parkin's Heros? Team of Champions??? Not sure if there is an answer but I am interested in people's memories.

ps sorry to break up all the Setanta discussion!

I think we were know as the cockatoos at one stage in the early part of last century. (?)

There was a cocky at one end of the ground that would screech when we kicked a goal, something like that, will have to look it up.

Yes, thats right Jarusa... but I guess I was after more colloquial names rather than official monikers. Like if Nicholls and his ruckrovers had a special name, a footy equivalent of the 'Awesome Foursome' or something like that.

The only thing I can remember is Mark Athorn and Tim Powell being calld 'Hacks of the Century'. But you know... team nicknames of certain eras, I am sure we had a few under Brittan, some in the 80's when we were recruiting everyone with talent... that sort of thing.

I'm only going by what I remember reading, but other Mosquitos were:

Ashman, Dominator?

I once tried to get a nickname for Ben Nelson going by shouting out "Come on Mandella" every time he got a touch... it never took off...

good call Bluebernz-
Ashman and Johsnton played in all three flags in 79,81,82.
Greg Wells also played in the 81 GF
and Peter Francis was a star in the 79 GF

Wasn't there something akin to the "crow-eater invasion" when Braddles, Motts, Sticks came across (1986?)
(..and Doratich from WA??)

During the mid-70s, when we had one of the best teams on paper - but never quite got to winning a flag (the year 1976 really shits me  ) we were known as "The Professionals" - I think it was a moniker that Lou Richards gave us.

Mosquito fleet...........

i'm dissapointed fellas..........who could
ever forget.....Spiro Kourkoumelis..........!

81-86.......62 games.....56 goals........!

of course he went on to play at St Kilda from
87-90.....35 games....15 goals......!

even if he played all his games at Carlton....he would
still be 3 games short........for the father son....!

that's what upsets me more........!

kindest regards tommi

i remeber i think it was rob healy reffering to a group of our middle tier players circa 00,01 'blue glue'

he even wrote an atricle about it. "blue glue, once it sticks, you're stuck" or something similar.

was refering to the fringe players who were doing well at the time, like franchina, nelson, hulme, freeborn etc etc

I think it was Gerard Healy.

Don't forget, we've always been known as "Silvertails" too.
