Post subject:  Short term needs - ruck or full back?

[short term = experienced but probably less than three years left to play]
I just watched the replay of our game vs Lions, as I'd chickened out from the last 1/2 of the 3rd quarter til the beginning of the last quarter during the live game
My view (enthusiastic but relatively uninformed) over the season has been that we needed a ruckman to support Kreuzer & latterly Hampson while they develop (interchangeably with Cloke, who I now hope can find a permanent spot somewhere in the forward line). The possibility of a Jeff White or Dean Brogan had me excited.
After watching last week's game I'm now thinking that a short term full back is a better option. I loved seeing JW up forward in the last quarter vs Lions, & hope Setana can fill his spot in the back line in 2009.
Mr Illy tells me an experienced fullback is pretty much impossible to find, but looking at the predictions in The Age today (26 Aug, sorry, can't find link) re who may be going from various clubs I saw Nathan Bassett as a "possibly going" from Adelaide & my eyes lit up.
Thoughts?

I'm pretty new to this, but would have thought we've got a good supply of Kerr-type players?

Hampson did a good job on the weekend and has a dammmn good leap at centre bounces.

He should develop, but you never know.

I think the defence looks good - would like another solid half forward.

I love Hammer, but you can't say he did a good job on the weekend. Fumbled anything that went near him

What pooie said - FULLBACK!!

We're "managing" in the ruck .. OK so the HO stats I've been keeping don't really support that but we didn't completely suck at it on Saturday .. what we do need is a good fullback who can manage your Mongas, your Buddies, your Browns, etc ... like we used to have

We've got a very, very good full back in the making...Jamison. Unfortunately he didn't play on Saturday night. But remember back to the first game this year against Brisbane. They kicked to Bradshaw 9 times in the first half, and he didn't get a single possession, Jamison killed him. Then Jamison hurt his shoulder, and Bradshaw got 9 possessions and a goal in the second half.

Keep in mind...Bradshaw's record in the lead-up to that game was 3 goals, 3, 5, 5, 7, 6 and 1 (Geelong), and after the Carlton game 6 and 6 before he got injured. Puts into perspective just how good Jamison's job on him was.

FB is not a problem. CHB is, as is CHF. While Waite's reading of the play and rebound off half back has been exceptional this year, he does struggle a little on the power CHFs. And it would be nice to release him to play loose across half back, on a wing, or across half forward.

So...we need either a CHF or a CHB. My preference would be to pick up a CHB, and release Waite forward, but I would be happy if we found a CHF and Waite stayed back.

As for the ruck, I think Hampson will make it, and Kreuzer will be a star. Haven't seen Jacobs so don't know. They are a few years away though, and so a stop-gap ruckman for 2 years would be useful (NOT White, and NOT Brogan for 3 years, as was discussed on AW tonight. Maybe for 2 years).

To answer the question, our most pressing need is a CHF or CHB.

We need a CHF.....

lets not carried away by Cloke's performance as a forward. He is not the Answer... We need a Genuine Second Tall Forward which we badly Lack at the moment. Someone who needs to kicks 50 goals to Assist Fev

You know how far off we really are when we head into the draft with a list of inadequacies.

I'd say our biggest deficiency is the forward line. We are missing that sneaky small forward like a chapman, didak, medhurst type that can push into the midfield but tear teams apart up forward. We need a player with the X factor, something different other the 190cm tall midfielder we have plenty of.

The same goes with a CHF. The third term against the lions we fell down across half forward this is why i think Mckinley would be a great for us as i honestly Fev is suited more up the ground cause weknow he can kick em from out side 50 and is one of the best kicks in the team who could hit up a leading Mckinlyy

Ah CHF......should be our main focus.

A Roughead type would complement Fev just nicely

We got smashed out of the middle. I agree we need another talented forward but the forward line had nothing to do with the 3rd qtr.

It says he only won six hit outs in the official stats, but stats can paint a picture and then centre square contests can paint another picture.

I was at the game and I distinctly remember him jumping over the top of the opposing ruckman in the centre square. He has a massive leap.

I agree with your point about around the ground - but that will/should? improve the more game time he gets.

Very athletic player.

I'm a fan & absolutely no disrespect to Jamison intended, but as you said "in the making".
