Let's assume sanity prevailed & Maurice Rioli was not in fact awarded the Norm Smith in the 82 GF. Who in your opinion should have? I would say Hunter for an even & courageous performance, after getting a big knock early. Johnston & Ashman missed a couple of shots & each could've finished with 4 goals. I didn't start following footy until 1983 & only just watched the game for the first time the other night, when it was on Ch 72. Incredibly Rioli went completely missing in the 3rd qtr when the game was turning our way. The other thing I couldn't help noticing was Kevin Bartlett's celebrations after each of his 3 goals - it was like he'd just kicked the sealer, the selfish prick. I loved Ashman's tackle on him in the final qtr. Anyway, who for the Norm Smith? |

Johnno easily I reckon. Stood up when we needed him and was his usual tough as nails. I think its one of the decisions that the judges would love to 'undo' |

There's no way in my mind that Rioli deserved the medal that year. Interestingly, when the players were celebrating after the match - Malcolm Fraser congratulated Wayne Johnston for being the best man on the ground, and I agree. Parkin coached very well that day...he's move of Mike Fitzpatrick to CHF at the start of the third quarter was a masterstroke. We kicked 5.4 to 0.6 in that quarter and were essentially home. The third quarter of that game was always going to be the decider. I'd have to give points also to Helen D'Amico. Ian Wilson (Caroline's Dad and then Richmond President) was so incensed by the 'delay of game' caused by the young stripper, he was convinced for years that it had been a ploy by Carlton to send her out onto the ground to distract his players. They certainly seemed rattled...I'm sure it would have been edited out of the Ch 72 footage, but from that moment on, Richmond never looked remotely like taking that game away from us. |

Hang on, I've heard the D'Amico claim before, but lets go to the video tape and it was Carlton that was on a roll when she appaeared. We had form memory just kicked a goal and were within one or even level/in front Typical Richmond look for excuses. |

The Dominator was the dominant player over 100 minutes....easily. Turned it on whenever there was a need to turn the game in Carlton's favour. It was a great GF.

Absolutely right aircav. We were on a roll. The D'Amico ambush (and I mean bush!) didnt help us at all. Poor old Bruce Doull almost had apoplexy. Not only was The Dominator best on ground, but he was the one who was most pissed off by the D'Amico intrusion and he was the one who took charge of getting her off the ground. What a day for one of the great finals players of the modern era. |

As a 15yo at the game, my memory was we were on a roll when Richmond were muffled by lovely Helen; actually, as she displayed her wares like the proverbial fishwife, an elderly gent sitting three rows in front of my brother and myself, had a coronary attack! My confidence in Carlton was such that, no matter what stage the game was @, Carlton would always prevail- this game was especially so.....

Jonno was the obvious one, but I tell ya - Mike Fitzpatrick could be considered a bit stiff to not win back-to-back Norm Smiths. I thought he was easily BOG in 1981 (when Doull won). And then could've gone close in 1982 as well. At any rate, I'd give: 3. Johnston 2. Fitzpatrick 1. Harmes DAYLIGHT Helen MORE DAYLIGHT A few more Carlton players MORE DAYLIGHT Rioli |

We are biased being Carlton people but I agree with that voting...I've never actually seen how close the voting was for the Norm Smith in '82, however to carry on with the theme thus far I am going to presume it wasn't a close shave....and despite having a soft spot for Tasmania, D'Amico was indeed South Australian. |

I'll go as far as to say that Johnno, in pushing Helen off the ground, was rewriting history......in more ways than one. "The Garden of Eden" moment where Eve (Helen) tries to tempt Adam (Johnno) with the apple (Carlton scarf)......ah, very moving, actually.  And they call this game great theatre!!

Ken Hunter who was Riolis opponent in the second half should have won the norm smith. He took him right out of the game in the 3rd and 4th quarters and set up heaps of attacking moves from the backline. For mine he was the best on ground followed by Johnston, Fitzpatrick and Harmes. |

I remember sitting in the Northern Stand with a perfect view of Marcou's sealer ...split the middle. The dominator was THE man.
