One of the most frustrating things this season has been our inability to start games well, in the sense of putting it onto the scoreboard. I was pondering how we never seem to jump a side and decided to go to the statistics to have a look at how we've started all eleven games so far this season... We've actually won five first quarters, which did surprise me somewhat. 5/11 isn't too bad but when you consider that our biggest quarter time lead has been only seven points it puts a slightly different slant on that stat. The most damning stat however is that although we've won 5/11 first quarters, thie five times we've been infront has seen us total a lead of only 24 points over these occasions. Therefore if we're in front at quarter time it's been on average by less than a goal. The opposition has won 6/11 first quarters against us. However the total lead gained by these sides over us at quarter time has been 158 points! 158 points over just six occasions! This averages out to the opposition leading us by just under five goals at quarter time over the six times they've been infront! Pretty hard to come back from there when you're a side like us.. Of course, this is only a statistical look at things and obviously doesn't take into account the fact that we might have done well in general play but not put on scoreboard pressure. So it's not a gauge on how well we've actually played but on the situation according to the scoreboard, which is ultimately the most important thing. Our biggest quarter time lead has been only 7 points. Our biggest deficit has been 44 points and our smallest quarter time deficit has been 17 points. This for me is a really worrying statistic. We've been outscored overall 325 to 191 in first quarters this season and incidentally, we've kicked more behinds in first quarters than goals, although the Geelong match slants this a bit (0.5.5 at quarter time). So what this tells me is that at our best we've be with a side or even slightly ahead at quarter time and at our worst we've been blown out of the water. It kills you to go behind so early in the game, despite the fact that there is theoretically more time to make up the deficit. I think on several occasions we've simply been shellshocked by how the opposition has started and by the time we've sort of recovered it's generally going to be too late. Even today against the Swans, 4 goals down at quarter time. We came back pretty well but it's very difficult to expect to win after continually giving the opposition these starts. What we must start to do is come out switched on and start to put on some early scoreboard pressure. Who knows what could happen if we're 3-4 goals up at quarter time. One of these days we're going to come out all guns blazing and swamp a side like what other sides do to us. But as long as we keep giving sides starts and not making the most of early opportunities then it's going to be hard to win games of footy. |

I agree, why do we start to slowly. I think probably 2 or 3 games this year would have been won if we were more switched on at the beginning of the game. |

Couldn't agree more Blues 2005. Hence my post at 2:43 in the Live Commentary thread. "I'll call it. GAME OVER." |

Pretty simple explanation for this actually. You will find that Carlton are the only team who haven't No-dozed up before the game starts ![]() - Twinone |

we're not up to it when the heat is really on. our 1st qtrs have exposed the soft and fragile underbelly of the team. we rally for 10 min blocks here and there after that, but the damage has already been done. |

Also had a look at how we started games last season.. Last year in first quarters we only managed 55.59.389 which is about what we're on target for again (after 11 rounds this season we're 27.29) First quarters last season were easily our worst quarters. Our opponents in first quarters last season kicked a total of 88.69.597 and after 11 rounds this season, our opposition is on 48.37.325 so is on target to comfortably break last season's opposition total. |

The trend continues.. Our eighth first quarter loss this season and tonight was the sixth time our of those eight that we've been down by more than 18 points at the first change. You can't win games of footy starting as poorly as we generally do. |
