Post subject:  Setanta:Rookie List or Senior List

Setanta has kicked 7 in the past 2 weeks of the VFL and has shown steady improvement in his game(particularly kicking).Does he have to be upgraded to the senior list next year under the present rules? Or can he spend another year on the rookie list?.The reason I ask is decision time must be looming on whether he is a player to be persevered with, with a view to being a senior player.Even a rookie list player must show enough to be considered worth upgrading or dumping after 2 years.

You can't have too many talls on your list(just look at West Coast) and his retention may allow Hartlett to be developed into a backman.Whilst he adds depth with another cleanout surely on the cards, this year will be viewed as ground zero in years to come.

Only 2 years allowed on the rookie list. (I think?)

This is Setanta's 2nd year.

From all reports he will be promoted to the senior list next year.

max 2 years on the rookie list, IIRC. So an elevation would be in order I'd say.

A club in our position would not dream of cutting loose a freebie KKP like Carlos, if he isn't elevated there should be a royal commission inquiry.

Even if he could stay on the rookie list nex year, it's time to see whether the experiment will work. Promoting him also allows Aisake to play consistent VFL football, rather than VFL reserves, so it's necessary for both his and Aisake's development!

Thanks for the info as it is surely time to elevate him at the end of the year.He has improved more than Deluca in 2 years on the list and it will be interesting whether they keep both.He just looks like an A grade sportsman(Aisake too) who excels at everything and if he had have picked up the game earlier he would have been drafted.Unless the brains who support other clubs want us to grab footballers like Mott and Angwin.

You may, or may not, have noticed that Pagan likes Deluca a bit.

I would continue with De Luca for another year.

The only thing done wrong with him is he has been continually played in the firsts when not mentally prepared and getting slaughtered.

Look at his body type, he has fair mobility and can kick both stationary and on the move.

Let him play in the Bullants for this year and into next.

Talk him through what the expectations are:

Strong body position
One grab marks - even spider doesn't one grab mark a lot

Let him develop more, at 22 or whatever he may take another one or two years. It is fact that the ruckman develop slower than others. Look how the process went for drafting him, one training session before the draft and BANG.

He is playing in a team that is at a low in terms of ACTUAL output and POTENTIAL output.

Worth holding on to and working with.

Does anyone else remember that Deluca didn't have a pre-season this year? He was always going to struggle this year and we shouldn't jump on his back just because he's having a few bad games.

Wasn't advocating delisting Deluca but it will be interesting to see whether he is retained if Setanta if upgraded and we take the 197 cm Clarke in the draft. You can't have to many talls on your list and with French 30 this year he'll stay only because he's tall not super-talented.
I think his first year got Blues fans more excited with his potential than was deserved and he needs the team to play well to be a good player.
Bryan has shown more Ruck ability, how to throw your weight around and how to be damaging with his strengths than Deluca in only one game.

Yeah, your only allocated 2 years (or seasons) on the rookie list. However, you can be on a teams senior list for one year, then delisted and picked up on the Rookie list for two. But because Setanta has done his two season we either have to pick him up in the draft or delist him.

Personally, i'm more than impressed with him. It was always a risk with him, but he has easilly met my expectations so far. I can see him being a certain starter in our senior line up in say 2007 maily in the ruck and CHF. Defensive skills are quite poor, but for somebody who has only played 18 or so games of football in his life he is suprisingly a good kick. Keeps his head over the ball all the time.

Funny, becasue apparantly Prendagast has been playing all his life and he still can't kick! :?

By the way........i walked past Aisakie yesterday and jesus is he a size! My god his big!

I think the way we are going at the moment, we need all the talls we can get.

Adding Mitch Clarke, if we are able to get him, to the list wouldn't hurt.

of coarse we would keep him....why use up a spot on our rookie list for 2 years developing this guy if we were just to ship him off when he's really starting to hit some form....if we delisted him someone else would pick him up and he'd be very damaging....we've done all the hard work in developing him and to let him go now is stupid....another team would definately take him if we dropped him...

Sentanta should have been promoted to the senior list at the end of last season and should be in the team now however the ultra conservative approach of the MC has let us down again...the man has so much athletic ability he should be learning his trade in the seniors and fastracking his development...but I guess what can you expect after Bryan was held back too long..

still bemused that he was promoted for one game in the seniors and then dropped !
MUST be put on Senior list and really short -sighted that he wasnt on this year - agree entirely Elwood

I think we should bite the bullet and just senior list both O'Hailpin's next year. Lets face it, younger brothers are always better players anyway, and I don't want to be in the same boat with Aisake next year as we were with Setanta this year. And yes, I know he's a long way off now, I don't care. He can mark, which means he's doing better that Deluca already, and if he can spot up a short pass then he's doing better than Prenda.
