Interesting article
Both play for Swan Hill who won the flag last year

Always had a bit of time for these 2 boys
Glad they are still playing good footy.

Interesting how Davies says he found footy a less pleasurable experience under DP

It'd be nice to be running around at the MCG in front of 80,000 every Saturday arvo, but you can't get up on Sunday morning after that and go out the river and drink cans with your mates.

I wish the guys every success in all that they attempt, but that quote from Davies, I think, a fair indiction of someone who doesn't have the passion, drive and application to play top-tier sports.

Great to hear they're enjoying playing footy, but after reading the article it should come as no surprise their time at the top level was so fleeting.

Beasey actually played for the Swan Hill Institute of Technology team as well.

Pagan destroyed Davies hunger for the bigtime by making it a miserable experience for him. He was an idiot Pagan, thank God he's not in charge any more, I shudder every time I think of the Pagan years.

I agree - It sounds like what I enjoyed so much about playing football whilst living on the Murray. Not something you need in an AFL player.....

While Pagan was a mistake for Carlton it's not entirely fair to blame him for the way some players took their chance at AFL level.

I actually thought Beasy was a bit hard done by when with us. At 190cm he was never going to make it as a back up ruck and I thought he should have been given a go at CHB or FF where his big leap and good kicking skills would have been a bonus. However for whatever reason iirc the MC really didn't give him a chance in one of those roles.

Former Blue Darren Pfeiffer finished equal second in the unfortunately named QAFL Grogan medal...

Pagan was not the best coach but I think he sorted out the men from the boys so to speak and asked big questions of players and many of them failed because at the end of the day Pagan had a list of duds. Who knows, with a decent list he may have done well.

I always had a bit of hope for these both players. I thought we messed Beasy's career up by playing him in the wrong position (ruck) when it seemed obvious he was a CHF or FF. Davies suffered from a lack of athleticism to an extent and might have been a bit light and his body found it hard to stand up to playing AFL.
Both players may have turned out if we had had better development people at their time at Carlton.

If he hadn't personally bought so many duds into the club, he wouldn't have had such a list of duds.

Well two things went wrong in that period. Our administration of the time cheated the salery cap and we lost a lot of high priority draft picks. Also our previous recruiting manager did an extremely poor job and recruited a lot of duds in the Parkin/Brittin era. Pagan walked in on a basket case that had it's draft picks ripped off it. Hardly had a choice when it came to picking players we had to take the dregs and rebuild from scratch.

Pagan's problem was that his coaching was based on intimidation. A lot of players responded well to this but there were plenty who didn't. When that failed, he had little else in terms of inspiring his players. Oh and he had no gameplan either!!

Pagan had to use draft picks - he could've used them on kids.

We might've turned up a gem or two. Instead we turned up Ricky Mott and company.
