Post subject:  2004 vs 2005 Player Performance

Thought it would be interesting to compare which players are doing better or worse between last year and this year.

The criteria is 3+ games played each year and the performance is a combined average of disposals, marks, tackles, goals, behinds and hitouts.

From this data, for those players that qualify only 10 out of 29 players have had better 2005's so far than 2004. The most improved player thus far has been Jarrad Waite, improving 80% on his 2004 efforts. It is great to see Livo on the improve as well.

In fact of our spine, 4 of the 5 players (Thornton, Livongston, French, Whitnall) are all having better years. More is the pity they have not been out on the park enough this year.

On the negative side the biggest drop-off has been a 34% decrease in performance by Trent Sporn.

The second column is average 'performance' in 2004, the third column is average performance in 2005, and the finals column is the percentage difference between 2004 and 2005 (positive means better performance, negative means worse performance).

interesting work there jarusa

is it possible for you to add a couple of extra columns.

like effective disposals versus ineffective disposals.

as i think that has been the real worrying trend IMO.

Campo, Houla and Stevens (albiet stevens is clearly injured) rack of the possesions but seem to have alot of turn overs as well.

Waite improvement is outstanding though, he has come on leaps and bounds this year.

I actually think that Cory McGrath is playing better footy this year, but apart from him I don't see any discrepancies.

Chambers played rounds 4, 5 and 6. I was surprised too when I saw that he had played three, could have sworn it was less.

Prez, would love to include contested/uncontested effective/ineffective stats, but the powers that be have made sure that they are difficult to access and manipulate. Also, they have threatened lawsuits on more than one person who has used them on the net in the past. Stupid really, stifles the promotion of the company.

really? that sucks, stupid pricks.

im interested not to point the blame at anyone, but generally interested to see where they are at.

e.g. Houlahan - while he has improved total possessions i dont think he is as effective as he has been. Same with T-Bird.

would be interesting to know - but if it risk trouble well it isnt really worth it.

Great stuff Jarusa. I'm actually part way through an article on the 22 from Round 22 last year and tracking how each has gone this year in an attempt to show what you've just demonstrated.

Maybe I'll send it through when done for your special comments.

Can we do a graph...

Performance in games against contract monies paid out by the CFC??

I reckon the more money you get paid at this club the worse you become...

That's interesting that you say that Synbad, as last night when I was studying for my maths exam, I came upon a question that required me to graph the linear regression of the total votes different players received in the Brownlow, and their salary. The highest paid footballers received the least votes, whilst the least paid footballers polled a lot more votes.

Don't know if it was true, or just made up, but it was interesting nonetheless...

Where do you get this stuff Jarsua - I could of used this to back me up on another thread where I said most of the players were heading the wrong way. I got shouted down and told to go follow league.

It looks like I made the wrong call On Waite though.

Synbad, send me a PM with every players salary this season and I will make a graph for you, $ per kick if you want.

Sydney Blue, I use http://stats.rleague.com/afl/afl_index.html most of the time for the raw data, and also http://www.footywire.com
