Post subject: | The Pago Pago Plan |
I have recently posted a number of topics about our list. There are two particularly that I want to revisit: MIA http://www.talkingcarlton.com/phpBB2/vi ... php?t=2756 and The List from 2003 to 2006 http://www.talkingcarlton.com/phpBB2/vi ... php?t=2588 Why you may ask? It’s pretty simple really. Unfinished business! I have looked back over them and the replies received and have come to the conclusion that I need to be more explicit about the challenges that we face and more importantly the solutions. I am amazed at the number of similar posts about the same subjects and I don’t believe we have consensus on the core issue..our list. I have come to the conclusion based on feedback that we can’t chop a third of the list, but if I was in the halls of power at OO, I bloody well would. We have to chop out the superfluous players to rebuild in order to become a power again. Let there be no doubt there are many fringe dwellers that just won’t be part of the 17th flag. Therefore there would be a number of risks that would need to be taken to get the ultimate prize. 1. Retirements/trades/delistings of players who offer poor value for money. Even at reduced contracts do they offer enough to mentor the kids who will be part of the grand plan? It is obvious that DP is using the rest of the season to determine who will be here next year. 2. He clearly doesn’t want to expose the kids to the rabble just yet. Similar to 2004 when Carrots and AB got a taste, I sure we will eventually see the likes of Russell, Hartlett, Blackwell and possibly Carlos, Smith and Becker dependant on LTI. With Raso to come in 2006, in my mind there are some exciting times ahead. 3. Taking the above two points in to account, it is simply a case of who to retain and who has to go to make room. This is the tough part, however… I still believe that we are only a couple of bits of the jigsaw away from being a very competitive unit. Some of you will think I wear rose coloured glasses or the sun has finally got to me, however we have a fairly solid base of good quality 18-25 year olds plus a couple of vets who will still be required to mentor the kids. I have elected to work backwards in terms of experience rather than the traditional way, so we can see where the gaps are. Without referring to MIA, it is obvious a number of acquisitions will need to be Midfielders, however lets look at what I reckon will be the ins and outs. Keep in mind we could have up to 38 players on the main list with up to 6 rookies. Total 44 as we have this year. 2006 Newbies (12) First Round Draft Pick Priority Draft Pick (please) Second Round Draft Pick Second Round Draft Pick (From Trade) Third Round Draft Pick (Maybe F/S) Fourth Round Pick (Maybe Traded Away) Fifth Round Pick (Maybe Traded Away) Sixth Round Pick (Project Player) PSD Pick (Un-contracted Player) Rookie Draft Pick Rookie Draft Pick Rookie Draft Pick 2005 Additions (11) Aisake O’hAilpin (Rookie) Anthony Raso Nick Becker (Rookie) Jesse Smith (Rookie) Luke Blackwell Adam Hartlett Jordan Russell Chris Bryan Eddie Betts Setanta O’hAilpin (Upgraded) Callum Chambers Pre 2005 (21) Adam Bentick Andrew Carrazzo Adrian De Luca Kade Simpson Karl Norman Justin Davies Brad Fisher Luke Livingston Andrew Walker Cory McGrath Jarrad Waite Bret Thornton Heath Scotland David Teague Ryan Houlihan Brendan Fevola Lance Whitnall Nick Stevens Matthew Lappin Barnaby French Anthony Koutoufides (Final year) Trade if Possible/Delist/Retire Scott Camporeale Trent Sporn Digby Morrell Simon Wiggins Troy Longmuir Ian Prendergast Jordon Bannister Glen Bowyer Brett Johnson Daniel Batson Sam Pleming David Clarke Well as you can all see that reduces the possible axings from 17 to 12. These are spots that will be needed for the newbies. Don’t be surprised if there is not a few more. Obviously there are a number of fringies on the above list that still might be chopped. We keep hearing that either Fev or Whittas could be trade bait. If so we could improve our order and picks in the draft. Not sure if we would from Houla, Teague, Sporny, Bagpipes etc. though. Final Point: If Pago Pago has the opportunity to refresh the list with at least 12 newbies, won’t he find a spot for them? You better friggin believe it! Your thoughts kiddies? |

Don't we all share the same opinion on Patrick Smith or is someone going to go out on a limb and say that they like him? ![]() |

Daniel Batson....no good?...some of our Bullants watchers reckon he goes ok and is worth developing...yet you want to chop him...bit harsh...worth another year as a rookie I would have thought... |

Been trying to find out if Batson has been playing for the Bullants reserves, cause we haven't heard much about his progress. Can any of you locals give us a leg up on this lad? |

For some reason i keep getting Batson and Becker mixed up???????? Batson, eeehhhhhhh i'm not sold on him i'm affraid. He played well a few weeks ago against Coburg and i think, kicked two goals! But apart from that i really haven't seen him do anything that would suggest he can make it in our senior side! Nick Becker though - i have faith in this kid! I'm starting to get excited! A lot to work on, but has potential~! |
