Post subject:  Draft picks/Priority picks etc.

Yes I know this is the 50 millionth topic on the issue, but I just wish to state that we cannot get so carried away if we do obtain the top 2 picks and/or priority pick, simply because:

THE DRAFT IS A LOTTERY

Sure, there have been some good number 1 picks, the likes of Riewoldt, Cooney, Kosi and Hodge. But there have also been disappointments: Headland, Goddard, Waterhouse. There is no guarantee that, hypothetically we pick up the number 1 draft pick, our prayers will be answered. 1st round draft picks dont always turn out so good, Livo who we picked up at No.4 is still struggling in his 4th season.

Some of our best players, and the best in the league for that matter, have come from picks 70+. Thornton was taken at No.73 IIRC and he shits all over Livo. James Hird im pretty certain was a pick in the 70s and he is one of the greatest footballers of the modern era.

We just cannot get carried away and become obssessed with tanking and thinking that after 2 seasons well be back on the top. At the end of day, our return to the top will come down to sheer hard work and determination, along with Denis' and the leadership group's mentoring

yeah BUT it gives you more chance. Its playing the percentages so I'd rather pick 1 than pick 10. But that's neither here nor there.

the thing is Livo V Thornton i think is a crock!

Thornton could never be turned into a gorilla - Livo is being made to totally rebuild himself into a very big man - and that takes time. Plus :Livo was recruited for a specific task which (I believe) he was never totally suited to (ie fullback) whereas t-Bird is being allowed to play his game - how would T-Bird go playing at CHF? I think Livo would give it a better shot. Livo is a good player, yeah I know most around here think he is a dud but only because of expectatipons - we were led to beleive we'd found the next SOS - Livo wa sstuffed from that moment - but likesome of those famous F/S failures(?) because they could be their dad.

I think Livo will make it - but never be a great player (nor will T-Bird for mine much as I like him he is a HB Flanker/3 tall defender) Livo's main probable is his height - and that is our mistake and not his ability.

Every year the draft is less of a lottery. The scouts, Carnival, TAC comp etc get better. In fact the only ones who slip through are the skinny kids, but these days even Farren Ray went early.
You start to mess with it, i.e take players for positional deficiencies and you get only third division. Otherwise it more like a punters "certain thing".

Its more of a science and less of a lottery these days....look at the last 3-5 years...the top picks are established good players..even going back to Livo in 2000...Reiwoldt and Kosi were the way to go...even Didak has established himself as a reasonable player.
Picking a James Hird , Bret Heady etc with some late pick is almost impossible these days....

Its amazing to me that clubs dont spend more resources on recruiting....Richmond dont have a recruiting officer anymore..Miller does it...very hard to believe that in todays modern age where you live and die by your clubs recruiting that a club could not have a permanent recruiter on staff...

The Hird thing is a bit of a red herring anyway. It was known he was a very talented player, but he was injured prior to the draft so there was a question mark over him.
