Gordon Collis - won a Brownlow in 1964 - never mentioned in Carltons greatest, seem to just disappear out of the history books.

Does anyone know the story of Gordon Collis, his time at Carlton and what happened to him after Carlton.

Was he a one-season wonder ?

Was a gun red head from around Healesville way. Was a stand out CHB in probably our worst year prior to 2002.

I think he had to retire due to injury- back if I remember

Was exactly what i was going to say , often plays a few ends with my old man and they lament the current state of the team, he's still a passionate CFC supporter .

Was a sensation in 1964.

I can still see his white arms sticking up over his red head and pulling down mark after mark. It helped, playing at CHB in a team getting flogged (up until then our worst finish).

I remember Essendon* players going to extraordinary lengths to get the ball to Ken Fraser in the last game to ensure he got Brownlow votes.

Don't get me wrong, Ken Fraser would have been an extremely worthy winner of the Brownlow - a fantastic mark and totally fair.

At that time it was thought that he could not handle Barassi’s tougher training so he quit.

I note that there was a question about what happened to Gordon Collis. I had some contact with him when he turned up in Albany Western Australia in either 1969 or 1970. He was an Insurance Rep and he ended up as the non-playing coach of the AFL team North Albany. I was aware that there was some moves to get him cleared to play but nothing eventuated. I think Carlton were reluctant to clear him. He was in Albany for a few years but not sure what happened to him as I left Albany when my employer moved me to another location.
Gordon appeared to be a nice person, reasonably quiet and seemed to be quite contented to work, coach and not be the centre of attention. I think there was some type of trouble that he was getting away from in Vic (Money or family) but it was never really mentioned or discussed in Albany.

I remember him well.....he was (without being unkind) a fairly ordinary CHF who did stabkick and dropkick well.

In 1964.....our Centenary Year; he was moved to CHB; which was a stroke of genius.....he was absolutely brilliant and unmovable....like a brick wall at CHB.....marked everything; and his CHF stabkicking skills proved to be matchwinners combined with his marking....a standout year if there was ever a standout year.....the Brownlow was never in doubt.....a worthy winner.
