From The Age:

"...a pleasing aspect of the increased attendance rate was that the crowds were 20 per cent higher than last year in Victoria, despite three of the biggest Melbourne clubs - Collingwood, Essendon* and Carlton - being near the bottom of the table.

"It debunks the myth that the national competition needs a strong Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon* and Richmond ... it's an indication of how strong the national competition is," he said."

Fact is such teams ARE strong, and still pull crowds etc when down. Let's see how well a Geelong does when going poorly

I honestly have not read "The Age" today - but if I had my guess I would reckon it would be an incompetent Australian of Greek-Cypriot background who is trying to justify his performance in a position that he is eminently under qualified for.

Correct Agro and KK - isn't he just such an idiot. The AFL has no idea - I am sure if the numbers are analysed it shows that the big four are pulling the crowds in spite of being off the pace. AFL has no idea how important the "old firm" (the 4 big ones) really is for the health and future of footy in Victoria.

Electric Blue, don't let Elliott off the hook scot free. He was the leading culprit in my opinion. The arrogance of that man was unbelievable. He still doesn't think he did any wrong to this day.

Anyway, that is in the past. Maybe Demetriou can figure out why Carlton got 40,000 to a match against Brisbane EVENTHOUGH CARLTON are on the bottom of the ladder. There aren't too many teams in any league around the world- English premier soccer or whatever - who can get 40,000 punters despite being on the bottom of the ladder.

The reason>? Carlton represent a team unjustly downtrodden by an omnipresent organisation. They are the underdogs. The fighters against injustice..... and people like fighters against all odds.

In contrast -
Essendon* represent a team who have been pandered to by the AFL
St Kilda are the handout kings.
Melbourne have received their fare share of handouts even though they did pick up Davey etc. with clever recruiting.

That leaves honest teams (once Elliott left) like Carlton. No wonder we get good crowds - as long as the players keep putting in 100% effort the crowds will remain.

As I typed that reply my mind wandered to Elliot, but after the present admin came clean Demitriou was the one (yeah, yeah and the commission) who punished me! and you can bet I did nothing wrong.\

It's my club and it is personal, and as a consequence I care much less about football than I used to.

It's actually false economy. That is it works in the short term, but will be a long-term disaster for the AFL if these three teams languish at the bottom for a sustained period of time. And the AFL knows it, that’s why they have put in place a yo-yo system of punishment and reward.
You do well for a couple of years; you get lousy draft picks and end up down the bottom. By being at the bottom you get PP's and bounce up again. The problem with the system is that the AFL is pulling all the strings. Clubs can do nothing to improve their situation by trading, by spending or by nurturing talent because that is so tightly controlled by the AFL.
And guess what, we are the schmucks who have to put up with a McDonalds product because all the strings are pulled by idiots in the AFL.

I am sorry guys, I miss the good old days, when every year the clubs would introduce some country kid who no one had heard of, who, by all accounts could "kick a hay-bail over a barn". Now we play for pee pee. Lucky us.

Laserkid, I agree with you in principle......but there is some scope for teams to choose their own destiny.

How else do you explain Hawthorn not taking up the option of picking up chris judd? - who in my opinion is one of the most exciting player for yonks.

Sorry tap, that is not relevant.
They finished bottom, they got first pick.
They picked up a champion, a future captain and a 200 gamer (baring injury). What more do you want from pick 1?
The principle still holds true. Play by the AFL's rules, bottom out and get a future leader and rise up in 2 or 3 years. The clubs that do it better will win a premership, the clubs who don't will be like St Kilda, full of promise for a couple of years until that dries up and then sink down again.
