Perhaps he was being a bit tongue in cheek, but that was his basic response to a Carlton supporter on last night's edition of "Sports Today" when the supporter suggested Thornton would be a good choice as the Blues' next captain.

Anyway, the upshot of all this is that Thornton will apparently be on next Thursday night's show so that he can tell Walls all about himself!

Walls has been a bit of prick when talking about Carlton in recent months. I think this is more out of frustration than spite. He is hurting as much as any Carlton supporter at the demise of our club and the competitiveness of our team. He is becoming a bit patronising when talking about the Blues

I love T-bird, but I think he needs to do a bit more before being touted as next captain.

Its on Melbourne radio station 3AW between 6pm and 8pm on Monday-Thursday. Thursday's program tends to have a big focus on the AFL games for the coming weekend

More like John Holmes than a "bit of a prick".

It was sorta tongue in cheek
He followed it up by saying he knew that every week he played his heart out for the blues at CHB but that he didn't know much else about him. The idea behind it was that if he was made captain many people (oppisition) would be surprised. Bit like Richie at Hawthorn

He wasn't having a dig at all. It seemed to me that he asked the question in an attempt to raise his profile. I think Walls would actually want T-Bird to be captain but knows he needs a bigger profile to handle the position.

That's exactly how I saw it. He didn't see him as a media type person, which is why he wanted to get him on the show next week. From what he said Walls thinks he would be a really good captain

That I would also have to agree with
He will always blame someone else if his opponemt takes a mark or gets a goal

When Bret can consistently beat Jonathon Brown and Warren Tredrea then he can be the next captain.

Yes and by that logic pretty much no CHB in the league should be captain of their club.

As for Bret's whinging, yes he does mouth off at teammates at times but about 90% of the time he is cursing himself for letting his opponent get a touch on it. The kid is a bloody perfectionist and he HATES giving an inch to his opponent. Sounds like a pretty good deal in the leadership stakes, but not quite captaincy material yet.

You are dead right. Which one of this lot would you have captain? Wakelin, Lucas, Hall, Macguire, Mooney, C. Cornes, Rivers, Roberts-Thomson, Staker, MacDonald, Hentschel, Hargrave, Johnson, Roughead, Watt. OK C. Cornes maybe, but Tredrea first. All the captains are midfielders, onballers or forwards and they can usually win their position. Bret is not there yet IMO. ;)
