Boy after every day that passes I get more confused ... I thought Campo showed great leadership ... his performance bought us one step closer to Marc Murphy. I thought that is what we wanted. I just don't know what's right anymore.

Short article, but it does distill down a lot of the problem:
Quote:
His numbers don't look terrible - an average 21 possessions a game is a handy strike rate. But they're no longer touches that do substantial, if any, damage.

Quote:
After three years, the Blues' runner is still a source of frustration to his coach with his lack of accountability.

Quote:
And captain Anthony Koutoufides is a different player altogether from the dynamo who sparked the Blues so regularly four or five years ago. Back then, 24 disposals from Kouta would have had a profound impact. On Saturday, they were barely noticed.

Sad days indeed.

Carlton is facing the same sort of loss of leaders as Australian cricket did when Chappell, Lillee, and Marsh retired in the early 80s.

And thats the whole point isn't it, when Chappell, Lillee and Marsh all retired at the same time their departure had a marked effect on the Australian Cricket Team and was noticed - I dont think the departure of Kouta, Campo, Whitnall and Lappin will make much difference.

Thats one of the reasons why we are in the shitter now - these men were not adequately replaced (although very hard to replace living legends like these I know).

And Diesel retired (prematurely....thanks, tribunal system  ) at the same time...

The article is spot on, albeit a tad too late.

Yup, remember: "We don't rebuild at Carlton...." I know we blame the AFL penalties for our current situation. But it is really a combination of that the recruiting and contract policies came to bite us exactly at the same time as the draft penalties. I remember Walls on the radio shortly after the event back in 02 saying that most people could not understand in how much trouble the Club was and that it would take at least 6 years or so to recover. At the time I did not believe him.... now I do...

Interesting that others are starting to notice what's been going on for awhile. It's not just us. The heat's really on the three senior players out of contract - they've been copping it a bit the past couple of weeks. And none of it seems to reflect too well on them, which may, in a small way, help the club make the hard decisions.

Its funny how individuals in the media will become "apologists" for our Senior Players like Campo, Kouta, Whitnall and Lappin, in particular I refer to 3AW's Gerard Healy.

Yet they have no trouble sticking the boots into the club as a whole. Talk about having "a bob each way".

What's Healey been saying?

That we should give them the contracts they want

I have a feeling the club has already made the decisions required and just looking for support. Support I won't offer by the way, but that is me, I have some kind of humanity in me towards certain long standing players of my footy club and don't like seeing people treated like this.

Surrey,

The club is bigger than the individual

Agree but there are many ways to handle things and right now, I'm not sure we are even close to doing things right.

Maybe so Effes but that doesn't mean players that have given good service, displayed loyalty etc to the club over a lengthy period don't deserve to be treated at least with some respect by the club and its supporters alike.
