Well there is four rounds to go and positioning for the bottom of the ladder is getting very competitive. The prized no.1 pick is at stake and we all know how vital that selection is! Just a quick look at the run home for the clubs still eligible for a priority pick.

Filth (with 5 wins)
Round 19 - Kangaroos @ TD - predicted loss
Round 20 - Carlton @ MCG - probable loss
Round 21 - Adelaide @ AAMI - predicted loss
Round 22 - Western Bulldogs @ TD - predicted loss

probably finish the season with 5 wins and therefore qualify for a PP

Dawks (with 4 wins)
Round 19 - Brisbane @ Gabba - predicted loss
Round 20 - Essendon* @ MCG - probable loss
Round 21 - Richmond @ TD - 50/50
Round 22 - Sydney @ MCG - predicted loss

no more than 5 wins and therefore qualify for a PP

Carlton (with 3 1/2 wins)
Round 19 - Port Adelaide @ MCG - 50/50
Round 20 - Filth @ MCG - probable win
Round 21 - Essendon* @ MCG - probable loss
Round 22 - Kangaroos @ TD - predicted loss

I can feel another two wins on the horizon, therefore 5 1/2 wins for the year and no PP

Draft order
Filth - 1 & 3
Dawks - 2 & 4
Carlton - 5
Essendon* - 6
Murphy to go to Brisbane

This reads as a horror story to me but at least we will have had two more wins which is great for the young'uns at Carlton!!! (heavy sarcasm used for the last part of that sentence!)

Id rather win every game for the rest of the year and miss out on the pick than lose.

For gods sake marciblue we are carlton supporters. How can you want to lose against the scum and filth for one player who we dont yet know will be able to cut it at AFL level.

Im not having a go at you, I am just get sick of this constant talk of the PP.

Who would you rather have,Wells or Goddard. With an even draft this year,it might not be so advantageous to win the spoon.

Point taken. It is a yearning that has only been brought about by the restrictive system our club operates under.

All I need to do is look back on 2005 thus far and realise that we need all the top young talent we can get our hands on. The draft system is becoming a more precise science every year and the best kids in the land are identified and selected at the top end of the draft. My ultimate want is for Carlton to return to the premiership dais as quickly as possible. And if that means having a couple more losses in an already futile year then so be it.

I understand that this years draft is not like 2001, or 2000 for that matter when Reiwoldt and Koschitzke were taken at 1 and 2, but this might be the only time we will be at the sharp end of a draft for some time. And objectively speaking, we don't have anywhere near the best list in the league. I want flags, not one or two wins at the tail of a season that will only achieve in forsaking some prime talent.

I'm sorry, I know I should be wanting us to win and when I go to this weeks game I will be screaming my head off for the Blues to win, but when you sit back and think and analyse the whole picture and where Carlton is at in terms of premiership success you can't help but be seduced by what the AFL's system is designed to offer, and that is reward for failure...

It is a contradiction I know!

I hope we win another game and finish above the Hawks, but missing a priority pick I'm not so enamoured with.

If the scenario pans out and "The Filth" can end up getting 2 picks and we end up getting Pick 5, you may as well start passing out "sharp knives" and "good rope".

Marciblu you make a lot of sense - we all hate to lose, but what long term benefit is served by winning these last few games in the season.

It is patently clear to all (but a few very determined Luddites) on this board that we need to inject more talent to our list and whilst Pick 5 would be OK, 2 picks in the top 4 would be a whole lot better.

Thats of course if they both dont die the day after the National Draft, isn't that right "The Prez".

I tend to disagree with the above i see the Filth round 20 draw giving them 5 1/2 wins.
And us one and half wins giving us 20 points still enough for PP.

Hence dawks spoon and both us and Dawks eligible for PP.

Marciblue - I have been a heavy critic of the priority pick situation in regards to the benefit it has given St Kilda....but please don't criticise the AFL's system until after we get a run at a few priority picks. The system should stay as it is for at least another 2 years.

STATEMENT OF THE BLEEDING OBVIOUS:

We don't want the AFL to change the system when we are down the bottom. It needs to be reassessed after Carlton moves up the ladder - not before.

Finishing the year with just pick 5 is suicidal.
We need Pick 1 and 3.

I think that Pick 1 is far more important in the PSD than it is in the National Draft. But of course the 2 go hand in hand.

There is rarely any amount of quality in the PSD apart from 1 or 2 disgruntled players, no more. You really want first pick in that draft. We benefitted massively from the Bulldogs being retarded in 2003, and taking Rawlings. Imagine if they used their brains though and took Stevens, we would have wound up with Rawlings. No comparison.

So in my opinion we need to finish bottom to get pick 1 in the Pre Season Draft.

Picks 1 & 3 in the national draft are a bonus.

Yep.
It's a domino effect.
We end up finishing last, we get Picks 1 and 3 and we get first pick in the PSD.
If we finish any higher we could end up with a Phil Read or someone like that.

I forgot about pick 1 in the PSD. The leverage it will afford us while attempting trades is invaluable.

Pick 1 gets us either Murphy or Ellis who are the 2 best midfielders/players. Pick 1 gets you first crack at in the PSD and is used as leverage when trading with other clubs.
Pick 1 gets first crack in the rookie draft also.

I know we need all the talent we can get but I just can stand losing.

I dont know what you guys think when you are watching a game but i bet it isnt i hope we lose so we get a PP. It is cum on blues you get beat these mongrols.

It is in our blood to win and that is all we should be thinking. We should try to win every week and the idea that Pagan is tanking is ridiculues. The secon hed suggest that Collo would throw him out the door. Collo wants to win every week.

If Murphy goes father-son there will be a report of mass -suicides ont eh news. It will be deemd a coincedince that they were all Carlton supporters.

I dont know why people think this year will be a wast if we dont come last. The improvement of the kids over the last couple of weeks has made the season worth something in my opinoin.

And Camelboy, Murhpy is overated :D

We all want to win all the time everytime. But as it stands right now, we are looking at other ways of winning. These PP are the upside , not the be all and end all. Don't think for one minute that any Carlton supporter enjoys losing. This is about long term gain !! :D
