Hello and welcome to the third last edition of Wolfister's Weekly one cent stats for 2005 - yes, I think the gang at Wolfister Inc (the big blue office at the bottom end of town) have now decided that it is no longer even remotely mathematically possible for Carlton to make the finals... we just don't think that the chances of 8 sides being thrown out of the competition at this late stage of the season is likely! But before we log off for the year, we have two big rivalries to analyse - starting with Collingwood.
Carlton and Collingwood have met 230 times, with Carlton winning 119 times (51.7%) at PM-67. We've won 2 of our last 5 (PM-99) and 5 of the last 10 (PM-16) - so really past and recent history just shows how close this rivalry is. We have met 45 times at the MCG, with Carlton winning 29 of those clashes (64.4%) at PM+397. Interestingly this will be the first time that the 2 clubs have met on a Saturday night.
Carlton have played 37 times in Round 20 for 26 wins (70.3%) at PM+510 - a stat that would have been more impressive but for our poor recent record winning only 1 of our last 5 (PM-154) and 3 of our last 10 (PM-201). We've actually lost our last 3 Round 20s - thumped by West Coast last year, St Kilda the year before, and a competitive loss against the Kangaroos in 2002 - the previous year's victory against St Kilda at the Docklands our only Round 20 win since 1998! We've played at the MCG only 5 times in Round 20, winning 2 of those at PM+20. Remarkably, this will be the first time that Carlton and Collingwood meet in Round 20.
We have played on the 13th of August 14 times for 11 wins (78.6%) at PM+179. Our last August 13 clash however was the very forgettable Qualifying Final in 2000 against Melbourne where we threw away that big lead to go down by 9 points. And unfortunately one of our other rare losses on August 13 was our only August 13 clash against Collingwood - back in 1938, where, as we all remember, we were beaten by 20 points at home. However we have played 3 times on August 13 in Round 20 - and we have won all 3 of those.
Till next week, remember 82% of the statistics believe that the VFL is more important anyway!
Wolf Out.
