Even though we have only had a Round 22 since 1970 there have been some very interesting game over the 35 years so far.

1976

Carlton drew with the Doggies at Princes Park to finish on top of the ladder, only to bow out in straight sets only two games later.

1987

Needing to win to gain top spot on the ladder at season's end the Blues came up against North Melbourne out at Waverly.

An after the siren goal by Kernahan clinched a 4 point win and top spot, making the path to the 1987 that much easier.

1993

Needing a good sized win to take top spot on the ladder from Essendon* on percentage the Blues had the luck to be up against the lowly Swans at home who to that stage of the year had won only 1 of 21 games.

Things did not go to script and it was Rohan Welsh who saved the day in the end for the Blues to scrape home by one point and miss out on top spot.

I was at that game and sitting right behind the swans race, towards the end of the quarter when it looked like the swans might win every Swans official and trainer you could imagine had come out of the rooms and were standing in the race watching the game. I will never forget the looks on there faces when they thought they were going to win and also the look on their faces when they got pipped at the post. They were devestated.

1997

Carlton needed to win to secure a finals berth. To do so they had to beat Richmond at home. Despite having the lead at various stages the Tigers overran the Blues to record a 2 point victory, thanks in no small part to some late heroics from former Blue, Ben Harrison.

This ended up being the last game for Kernahan, Williams, Spalding, Hanna, Madden, Dean and O'Sullivan.

There are a few I have not mentioned, some good some very bad.

Any particular Round 22 games you remember?

2001 Scum v Bitchmond

Scum lost then smashed the tigers the very next week in the finals.

I remember playing Ess in the wet at the G in 94 & getting beaten. It just seemed to derail us before the finals & sadly this turned out to be the case.

Ironically we got them in Rd 22 the following year also, but this time won by 40+ & entered September with confidence.

I have shocking memories of that Rich game in 97 Jars…one of my worst ever days at the footy. We seemed to have about 15 fit men by the end of that match.

I'm pretty sure the final margin was a measly one point.

So we missed out on the finals by 2.

That match was the closes I've been to tears at the end of a match.

All I can remember was the Legends Stand was painted yellow and black and was shaking when they were coming back.

I was wrong about the last games though, only Kernahan Dean and Hanna actually played in that Round 22 game.

Pretty sure Dean played the next season, his last game was a win in Adelaide against port.

That 1997 loss to the Tigers only saved us the embarassment of losing in the finals

Good get brad.

Some of these books on the history of the club are a disgrace really.

I have to learn to double check as much as possible everything that I use from them.

The 2003 game v Kangas was the most gutting game I've ever been too. Stayed to the last miserable second as well. What was it 124 points?

If Essendon* had won that game, we would have finished 4th and played Essenscum in the first week.
That whole week, the talk was that Sheedy would drop that game to avoid Carlton, so given the turnaround in results from rd 22 to the inals I was pretty suspicious

The 20th win for the season. Only bit I remember of it is Alessio getting pinged for holding the ball after Diesel wrapped him up in a great tackle from behind.
