Post subject:  Waite 2005 vs Kernahan 1986

Jarrad Waite has just played a season where he stepped up a notch. He still has another notch or two to climb if he wants to consider himself amongst the elite in the competition.

I thought it would be interesting to compare the young Waite to the young Kernahan.

In 1986 when Kernahan was a spritely 22 year old (turning 23 on the 1st of Sept 1986) he gathered the following stats.

From 25 Games:
233 kicks
156 marks
95 handballs
62 goals

Average:
9.3 kicks
6.2 marks
3.8 handballs
2.5 goals

In 2005 when Waite is a spritely 22 year old (turning 23 on the 3rd Feb 2006), therefore at the same season 7 months younger than Sticks.

From 21 Games:
185 kicks
119 marks
95 handballs
36 goals

Average:
8.8 kicks
5.7 marks
4.5 handballs
1.7 goals

Considering that Waite is 7 months younger at the same stage this is not a bad comparison at all. (especially considering the relative ladder positions of the 1986 Carlton side versus the 2005 Carlton side)

In fact if Waite improves a bit again next year he will pretty much match what Kernahan did in the 1986 season (at the same age) before he was made captain in 1987.

Food for thought?

How often has Waite been playing on the #1 defender compared to Sticks who would've had the #1 defender from day one

You tell me, how many times did Waite play on the #1 defender this year and how many times did Kernahan play on the #1 defender in 1986?

Different time, different styles, different position, different age, different background, different expectations.

Let's not stack Waite against one of the best CHF's the game is likely to see. Ever.
Especially when he's only playing HFF/Wing.

Perfect example of how stats don't always give the full picture. Why not just compare him to Wayne Carey?

Wayne Carey wasnt as good ....

I really dont see the point of pointless games nor pointless statistics.

Id have preferred a thread that gave us Waites stats and was not compared to anyone like Sticks... but we spoke about what he might need to improve on to be a good CHF.....
Reality check!!!.. please.....

Waites season was encouraging.. doesnt compare to a champion... PERIOD!

I like to compare Waite's development(not his position or stats) to Kouta's. Kouta's 3rd year of senior football was 1994 the year he stepped up, Waite's 3rd year was this year in which he madae huge improvements.
We know what Kouta did in his 4th year of seniors back in 95' can Waite do the same.

This is what I was getting at, asking questions such as, can Waite take that extra step? How close can he get to a Kernahan?

The stats were not an exclamation point saying this is the way it is, they are a question mark so that a discussion can be formed.

But yet again a potentially interesting discussion goes by the wayside.

Oh well.

Problem with Waite is there's a huge gap between his best games & his worst games. I don't think that was the case with Kernahan.

Problem is Jar you are not allowed to consider even the remote possibility that one of our kids might be anything other than a battler.

Mind you
good stats for a battler

Let us hope he continues to improve.

is he a Sticks? - I have my doubts, Its the pack marking thing, Sticks took big, big grabs (in importance not in height) in the middle of packs on a regular basis.

Waite is not in that mould (not yet at least) but it does show he is showing more consistency and getting more and more of the ball. He is developing (though some would have us think no kids develop under Denis).

Just as Kernahan's season in 1986 was encouraging. Instead of bagging stats everytime they get posted, why not either ignore the thread, or treat them with respect?

The biggest advantage Kernahan would have had over Waite is an extra couple of years of playing senior football, and finals football to boot. Certainly a better developing ground than time in the Bullants IMO.

Waite may never be a Kernahan, indeed, nor do I want him to be. The next Jarrad Waite will do me, if he fulfils his potential, we'll all be happy.

Stats don't always have to indicate an opinion, merely observation from which opinion can be formed. Why is this so hard for people to grasp?

Kernahan had a mudflap to behold in 1986…Waite has the job ahead of him to match it

Well I found the stats interesting.

I hope Wait fulfills the potential that we all know he has, then he can become a legend is his own right.

If he is to be the player he is capable of being, a gun, he needs to improve his foot skills. It's frustrating seeing someone like him cough up the ball like that but you gotta love his guts and determination. He is definetely a long term project player and give a couple of years and he will consistently be an out and out star.

Already though he has shown stacks of ability. Just needs to work on his weaknesses.

Sticks was that good he was signed on a form four when he was a 15 or 16 year old . Jarrod Waite was lucky to be drafted at all..Wisbey said he would be lucky to make it and didnt think much of him which shows even the so called U18 experts(re: the sheik thread ...are just guessing)...I remember Frank Dardew pushing up for Waite but no one else.
Waite is a good prospect but its hard to compare him to Sticks purely on stats alone as circumstances were different and positions played were also different...Sticks as a youngster was a out and out gun....like Brereton, Carey and Jonothan Brown he didnt need much of an apprenticeship. Main problem in comparing the two is the fact that Sticks was a true CHF and Jarrod is a undefined 2nd or 3rd forward...
