Dont think I've ever heard a bad word about Fisher (aside from some doubts on his kicking), yet at the same time he is never really mentioned in discussions about captaincy material and leadership. For those that follow the club closer than 'regular' suporters or just anyone in general, where do you see Brad Fisher in terms of leadership potential?

For mine I think he would be an ideal candidate given his 'clean' history/image and the fact that he would be consistently 'in the play' as a key forward - particularly given his pack marking ability AND if one of Fev/Whitnall are traded (I doubt the club will trade both at the same time)

Thoughts?

Hmm, nice theory, but not sure about the practice. While it is early days for a lot of our younger guys, I see more potential in guys like Waite and Thornton than Fisher. But hey, I'd love to be proved wrong, you can't have too many blokes with leadership qualities.

I think Fish is the best young prospect we have. I was worried the knee would slow him down but it doesn't appear to have bothered him.

I think is Fish would be one of those leaders were you follow by example. Lance is one of those leaders who shouts orders, a General, while Fish would be like Kouta and the team would lift when they see the Fish do something good.

Way too early for Fish. Let him solidify his place in the side before you start talking leadership positions.

Personally, I dont think thornton is a good long term option as a leader - he fails to keep his emotions in check (ie dummy spits at teammates). It would be less of an issue if it only happened once every 3-4 games (ie it is warranted and is likely to have a greater effect) but every second contest is a bit too much for my liking (borders on petulance and is certainly not going to 'inspire' teammates to greater deeds).

Waite is a good option as a leader though my gut feel is that he will develop into more of a mecurial/eye catching player up forward rather than one who performs consistently week in week out along the lines of a Loewe, Hall, Reidwoldt (Fisher). With respect to leadership, my preference would be the latter :)

umm... I'm pretty sure Fishers spot in the team is pretty secure atm (barring injury) - would probably be within the top dozen players picked every week

Throntons dummy spits are a bit of double edged sword i reckon. The midfielders get pissed at him for spitting the dummy but then they dont want T-Bird to get pissed so they make sure that their players dont kick it to throntons, thus thorntons player doesnt get the ball. This can only be a good thing when Thornton usually takes no1 forward.

Silly theory but if you think about it it makes a bit of sense.

Are you sure? If he has three or four poor weeks in a row are you sure he wouldn't be dropped to the twos for several weeks?

He needs a full year in the seniors to solidify himself as a full senior player.

He played pretty much a full year in 2003...

He's more regular than Walker.

True, but that doesn't really say much.

He averaged 13 disposals and 6 marks. Some of our midfielders rarely get double digit disposals.

I guess its all down to interpretation. Often times I think Thornton is cranky at himself of he makes a mistake, or just cranky that the team is not going so well. I don't think he actually singles out a guy and goes off at them all that often. I think his emotions are a positive, you can tell he is hurting when we play poorly. While I agree it is a fine line between showing your emotions and overeacting, I would say that on field displays of genuine emotion, good or bad, are one of the things we are missing with Kouta. His on field persona is kinda like Bjorn Borg, he's ice cool. That's good, but sometimes that needs to be balanced with some real fire in the belly, like Lleyton. Hey I said a BALANCE!

Fish is a superb prospect, but having only played 1.5 seasons we need to see how he develops.

I think he is a monty for being part of the leadership group in 2-3 years, but is still a relative babe in terms of footy experience. What I mean is that for most of his games he has played under low expectations from opposition coaches, our supporters - he was seen as a fringe player. About 5-6 weeks ago people started to see how important he was to our team structure and started earning alot more respect. Next year shlould see him cop some pretty close attention, especially if one of Fev/Lance is gone. How he handles that extra pressure will be a good sign of the leader he will become.

He is a great prospect for us, but he will never be a Barry Hall, Tredrea type who is the dominant key forward (unless he beefs up majorly), he will tend to be more of a second or third marking option like a Mick O'Loughlan or Kent Kingsley type.

I think he is the sort of player that will be the one to lead us forward, and 2-3 years time, who knows, he may be the one, but I don't think he is the Ben Cousins, Wayne Carey type player to be appointed as a young captain.

Rhetorical question there 4thchicken..?

Fish shows the type of onfield leadership that we should come to expect of the players, however this isn't the case, and his leadership qualities, sadly, only stand out in an environment which lacks this very neccessity.

Whether he can become a leadership figure is tough to determine, but in the current Carlton outfit, I wouldn't be surprised.

I have mentioned this before but 2 years ago at a function in Perth. Sticks rated Fisher as captaincy material and likened Fish to himself.

Fish got bigger raps than Waite and others at that function.

The caveat though is that Sticks seems to rate a lot of players as captaincy material ;)
