Post subject:  Your best Carlton finals memories

Following on from slo mo's thread we may as well be true sad cases and ponder our greatest finals memories.

I can only vaguely recall the 81/82 flags, no chance at all with the 72/79 flags, but can remember quite well the successes of 87 and 95. 1987's flag was great because it was against a tough opponent in a hot September. And of course 1995's triumph was a highlight simply for it's year long brilliance. Since then there's been slim pickings sadly, except for this one day when we were unexpected...

...I'll save that one for later.

Tell me your favourite finals memory.

The general falling off the dais in 95.

For that matter, the general's little speech in 87 too...

1995 GF was great but 1999 Prelim. was the best.
- Fraser Brown! Even better when my mate and I realised who it was and shouted in unison - Wallis! :-D :garthp:
- Kouta was somehow there to repel every Essendon* attack but also marking on our goal line to kick an impossible goal  .
Shaking Kernahan's hand a couple of weeks after the '87 Grand Final was also great, a man mountain but more so when you're just a teenager.

Silvagni's smother in the 99 qualifying (?) final against West Coast at the MCG. About sixty points ahead but he still did the one percenters.

His finals series in 95 wasn't bad either - made White, Carey & Ablett look decidedly second rate.

my all time favouritte was 72 cos I was with my dad and brothers and we just screamed from first bouce til I was tucked in bed that night and dad was all smiles 'cos he loved Big Nick and the crowd that day just seemed to be all carlton and the sun shone sweet and we were on the wing and could see the action at both ends and dad was so happy he commentated the whole game for me and it was never, ever tight.

I also remember 68 but that was scary and the main thing I remember that day was ther wind and jezza running towards goal and kicking the ball but the wind blowing it off course. That game was too close to enjoy.

My favourite finals memories involve the whole 1995 finals series. I was fortunate enough to be at every game. Grand final day was obviously a highlight, but the preliminary final against the Roos was also a top game to see. It was a night game played in the wet, but we were just unstoppable.

My other finals highlight is the 99 prelim and my hero Fraser Brown laying THAT tackle on boofhead Wallis. I was at that game with my Mum, at 3/4 time the Essendon* supporters sitting behind us were talking about where they were going to line up for Grand final tickets. Mum and I exchanged a knowing look and we both sensed that something extraordinary was about to happen. Enter the Kouta-man!

I think we've been fortunate enough to have 3 of the bigger finals performers in our era.

Wayne Johnson
Stephen Kernahan
Stephen Sivagni

Very lucky!!

Loved the 1995 Grand Final, but wasn't my favourite, because I wasn't really old enough to understand it as much.
BUT.. even though we lost the Grannie, Fraser Brown's tackle on Wallis in the 1999 prelim would have ot be my all time favourite finals moment, I love beating Essendon* and beating them like that was bloody fantastic! My brother, dad, sister and I were all in the car on the way home from my brother's local finals footy... and the amount of noise we made after Brown's tackle was enormous. :-D

murphy holding the ball above his head 99' prelim. great moment to see the faces of all the Essendon* players. also made even better because of mantons speech to the boys the week before about beating Essendon*. doesnt get much better than that.

THAT GOAL from Lance, before THAT TACKLE from Fraser and THAT LOOK OF UTTER JOY from Justin. Oh, and Manton's first goal that day which caused Drew Morphett to go all apoplectic in the comm box. 8)

82 GF (70 & 72 equal second place)

we were given NO chance of winning by the meed-yah (like 70, 72 & 99 prelim) and then so many things went wrong for us on the day (although ditchburn getting concussed may not necessarily be one of them  ).

but we gutsed out a memorable win that gave the finger salute to that scum supporting tom prior (hun sports editor at the time) who kept labelling us as being soft throughout that era (despite 3 flags in 4 years  ). prior even wrote a story on the eve of the match saying that parkin was off to coach the filth after the GF, so we actually had to take time out of our GF preparations to negotiate a contract with parkin.

it was a great match too ... our opening burst; hail; hunter & ditchburn getting KO'd; losing control of the match while hunter was off (this is the bit where rioli got a kick); our trademark 3rd qtr; helen, doull & johnno's little docey-doh; and that nerve-wracking, pulsating last qtr to beat that dirty rabble (i'd been waiting since 73!!!!).

the celebrations after that game were the sweetest!! not that i can quite remember ... but that's what they tell me!!!!!

81 second semi I reckon it was..Bosustow's smother on the boundary line then freakish goal over his shoulder out at Waverley...best goal I have ever seen, the guy is a tool, but one of the great entertainers!!!

99 prelim for this huckelberry.

simply put - the best game ive ever had the pleasure in watching.

will never forget that game

getting told off by the old girl in front of us (bummer supporter) to be quiet and her getting told by the old girl behind us (carlton supporter) to mind her own business.

jumpin in the aisles after every goal or point in the last quarter.

the whtinall goal

the tackle

kouta's 700th mark

just the best game ive ever seen live - the crowd was the loudest ive ever experienced at an AFL game

"The Tap" from Harmesy in the 4th row of the stands back to Kenny Sheldon in the square to knock the filth out of another GF.

The '99 prelim and fraser Brown's tackle. Kouta was a man mountain all day but you just knew that Fraser vs Wallis was personal and Wallis could have bombed it forward but took Fraser on instead....and then.......how do you like them apples Scum!!!!!
