Setanta o'hAilpin, in any thing i read, has been described as a champion Hurling player and once recieved the young hurler of the year award (i believe?)....yet on the website it says hurling is a game similar to hockey...played with a ball and a stick....
it also has a write up on gaelic footy...which is what i thought setanta originated from.....can someone help me out...?

Yep, he came from hurling.

He also played gaelic footy as well.

When you have got a few dozen big Irish blokes running around with sticks you have to be tough to play at the highest level.

Hurling is a very quick, very tough and very skilful sport.

Kevin Bohane can give a much better explanation than that.

check out this site for more info as well: http://www.rebelgaa.com/

In ireland a lot of players play both sports The Shag , the Ó hAilpín are all gifted dual players. Setanta was a great hurler. He won an all-ireland minor hurling championship medal with in 2001 ( minor under 18 grade ). He progressed onto the cork senior team in 2003 & became a cult heo in cork. he made his debut against clare, score a goal in the munster final against waterford ( which u can see on rebelgaa ), another in the drawn all-ireland semi final against wexford before scoring another in the all-ireland final against kilkenny. as a result he got young player of the year which is like Rising Star? competition in AFl. He also played football with his club Na piarsaigh and was remoured to be getting cork senior football trials before he moved down under.

Hurling- i'll try to explain this with cricket. I'm sure you can understand positions as they are very close to AFL positions. In hurling it's 15 V 15 with 5 subs allowed but it not revolving door thing then afl has going on - it's more like soccer sunstitutions. You can wrip the ball on the ground , catch it in the air ( like wicket keeper ), hit it off your hand ( imagine throwin up cricket ball in front of you and striking it in the air ), handpass the ball, kick it & run with the ball balanced on ur hurley ( see niall mccarthys 2nd point in the all-ireland final last year to see this ). Ur only allowed 4 steps and to hit the ball into your hand one time after you have got it into ur hand the first time. shoulder hit are meant to be shoulder to shoulder. Scoring is3 pts for international rules goal and one point for hiting an over. Watch the videos on rebelgaa. to give you a better idea of whats involved. if u need any further help give me a PM

I'm not really happy with my first effort so found some more info for you!!!
The stick, or "hurley" (called camán in Irish) is curved outwards at the end, to provide the striking surface.

The ball or "sliothar" is similar in size to a hockey ball but has raised ridges.

Hurling is played on a pitch approximately 150yards long and 90yards wide. The goalposts are the H-shaped as on a rugby pitch, with the crossbar lower than a rugby one and slightly higher than a soccer one. You may strike the ball on the ground, or in the air. Unlike hockey, you may pick up the ball with your hurley and carry it for not more than four steps in the hand. After those steps you may bounce the ball on the hurley and back to the hand, but you are forbidden to catch the ball more than twice. To get around this, one of the skills is running with the ball balanced on the hurley.

To score, you put the ball over the crossbar with the hurley or under the crossbar and into the net by the hurley for a goal, the latter being the equivalent of three points. Each team consists of fifteen players, lining out as follows: 1 goalkeeper, three full-backs, three half-backs, two midfielders, three half-forwards and three full-forwards. The actual line out on the playing field is as follows:

Goalkeepers may not be physically challenged ( terrible rule in my opinion ) whilst inside their own small parallelogram, but players may harass them into playing a bad pass, or block an attempted pass. Teams are allowed a maximum of three substitutes in a game. Players may switch positions on the field of play as much as they wish but this is usually on the instructions of team officials. A goal is signalled by raising a green flag, placed to the left of the goal. A point is signalled by raising a white flag, placed to the right of goal.
