I'm surprised...no word yet on assistant coaches contracts...just that everyone is on notice.

Here's my 2 cents worth. We're not gonna win a flag in the next 3 years. We're going through a rebuilding phase - and that needs to happen on field as well as off it. The players coming into the club from 2002-2007 are very much the future and need moulding.

If you've learnt anything about Paul Roos and the people he put around him in the last couple of years...you better understand why the Swans have just won the premiership.

John Longmire(forward), Ross Lyon (midfield)and Peter Jonas(defence) are experts in their field. Not forgetting Stuart Maxfield who sent the message as midfield assistant this year just as he played.

Also - Lewis Robert-Thompson...personal tuteldge from SOS who refused any payment from the Swans for his services.

Time then surely for us to get rid of the hangers on who have delivered nothing IMO. Elshaug - nothing he has done or said has impressed me. After all - if he's supposed to be helping the midfield - what the hell is barry Mitchell doing there. Mitchell gets my nod here - as does the inclusin of Bret Ratten, whom we know can coach.

It's not too early to get Peter Dean back to progress his coaching career. Tough as nails...coaches as he plays...get some help from SOS and we're on the right track.

Earl Spalding back from Freo? Why not? If we want Setanta to progress as he should - I can't see why a bloke who is serving an apprentiship under Chris Connelly at Freo can't have a say in helping the O'haipins, Hartlett and co. and learn a bit under Pagan as well.

That's Pagan (Head Coach) / Ratten (midfield) / Dean (defenders) / Spalding (forwards + ruck)...the latter 2 getting some voluntary assistance from SOS now that we have lost Carey....Baz Mitchell continuing to coach the Ants.

Thoughts on rebuilding the coaches box? Is Libba officially gone? Can the medical team surgically remove Elshaug from Pagan's ass?

I'd drop Libba and Elshaugh like a bad habit and keep Mitch on the grounds that he has done wonders for the Bullants, in particularly our younger players.

I doubt very much whether Ratten would come back to OO and be an assistant to Pagan. I also doubt he'd get a look in even if he applied should a position become available. I get the feeling the same happened to Bradley when he applied two years ago. Problem is a lot of those boys (Bradley, Ratten, Hickie etc) were put out of place when Pagan first came in and didn't really get along with him.

I'd like to see us go outside of the square and sign people who aren't Carlton people. I'd like us to go after Ashcroft. Does anyone know where he is coaching at the moment? I'd also like us to go after either a forward coach (damn you Duck!) and/or a ruck coach. Harry Madden coming in once a week isn't enough for mine.

very true doctor

i would go as far as holding back on 'buying' players in the trade period or PSD (e.g Power) if it meant investing in the right support staff....

give these guys a club and a culture with the right support.

Swans lacked genuine super stars, but had everything you described and more.

It will take 3 years only when we have these ingredients in place.

I take my hat off to the swans who more than most clubs have known what it like to have nothing - AND they have learned from it!

Elshaug coaches the defenders. Libba does the midfielders. Dean is currently assistant coach of the Bullants.

Well that's a problem there in itself...Defenders? I remember him as a [player - not a defensive bone in his body...like Libba - piss off!

Agreed. Or at least, just as in drafting, we should go for the best talent available when selecting our coaching staff. If they have a Carlton playing background, great, but what matters is getting our coaching mix right, not jobs for the boys.

agreed to a certain extent. Perhaps the ingredient of being a carlton footballer is an overriding factor. If they are quality people and coaches..then why not. Elshaug and Libba just haven't fitted in - although have come to the club in very trying circumstances...

I guess my frustration is borne out of not getting the best person and I really thought that some decision could be made and Sticks may have got Shaun Rehn to Optus Oval...the guy is senior coaching material...and now brisbane have a host of ready made coaches...who are under Leigh Matthews (arguably one of the greatest coaches of the game) ....about time Denis did the same...or are we waiting for DP to go before we can hope top get some of these quality people back?

What Happened to Carey?

Did he get a gig elsehwere for next season?

PS: Sorry if there has been a post which explains the answer to this question, but I looked a bit, and couldn't find any explanations...

He's been signed up by Collingwood.
Why we didn't swoop first I will never know.
Same goes with Rehn.

PJ I am really surprised the blues didn't offer him (Carey) something as well.

Do you know in what capacitity he will work with the wobbles?

I thought his gig with Foxtel would make it real hard to have time to perform a coaching role as well?

Collingwood have plenty of money to throw at people like Carey. We're struggling to pay our current bills.

Elshaug is a boring bloke with a boring voice but Denis likes him.
Theres a whisper he may be gone....

So who are we targetting then...... They seem to leave everything to the last minute. I would like to see Peter Dean, Silvagni and Ratten back in a coaching capacity. But I suppose that would never happen.

Probably the forward coach.
SOS has been signed up as their defence coach with Robert Shaw and Peter Daicos as midfield coaches.
Bit of talk that Craig Starcevich will be leaving the Lions to return to Collingwood as their fitness instructor.

Talking to Peter Dean recently, he would love to get a gig at the club...
Thats someone who cares deeply about the place STILL!!!...

From what i understand there will be an emphasis on develpment and id love to see Dean get 'defensive coach'.

Ratten.. doubt it!!!!.. cant get a gig in the SANFL or Lilydale...and certainly not while there are elements of his playing career still at the club.

SOS???? what for????... shithouse commuicator and is enjoying his stints elsewhere...

Why do we need Carlton alot of influence back anyway????

Surely there are ex players from other clubs who might be better qualified to help....

The more people throw Dean up as an option, the more I like the sound of it.
As Synbad said, he is a Carlton man through and through and cares deeply for the club.
We need those types of people around the players at this point in our re-building phase.

So Carey's no longer an option and neither is Rehn.

Who do we look at bringing to the club?

If you speak to Dean about our squad and allow him to talk you soon notice the passion he has for the kids and his willingness to teach and nurture.

Hes a quiet bloke and pretty much in the Johnny Worsfold mould .
Im not sure hes the kind of bloke who could be a senior coach but he certainly is astute with his thoughts and his knowledge of the game...

Peter Dean never got the accolades of his backline mates SOS, Sexton, Macca and Ang but he was like their leader and he had a huge influence on Macca's career especially.

PJ where did Rehn end up? I really thought he would have been a great option as he could have been an assistant and ruck coach as well.

Peter Dean = de facto 1995 NS medallist.

Typical Peter Dean did his job in a hard-nosed, bloody-minded manner. Didn't need the accolades or attention, he just bloody-well did it. Just showing the kids a video highlights package of Dean's career would teach them more than Elshaug has.

Maybe they could do worse than look at other players from the '95 era, like Dean Rice, Earl Spalding as someone mentioned, maybe even Fraser Brown (now wouldn't that piss off A Demetriou and K Sheedy?).

I think it would be good to see some old Carltonians in the box because we have very few senior playwers left to pass on club Culture and respect for the club's past, so the old boys might be able to fill that role.

And regarding recent ritirees from other clubs, has Martin Pike been offered a position anywhere? He could be signed up to shake a bit of "nasty" into the kids.
