There are quite a few Carlton supporters who like to peddle the line that the Pagan game plan is all about kicking it long at all costs. Some even use this line of reasoning to criticise Pagan, saying he is living in the past.

Let the following data once and for all bust the myth of the long kicking Pagan game plan.

Every time someone says all Pagan does is tell the players to kick it long, show them these numbers.

Image

Now quite simply, WE ARE NOT KICKING THE BALL LONG.

In the year 2000 every second kick was a long kick, but as you can see the 3 years that Pagan has been at the helm the long kick has been used THE LEAST.

BUSTED!!!!

Data from pro-stats.

AHHH, sorry Jarusa, but i dont think that stat means anything.

WE do only go long, its just in 2000, we had so many more kicks that so many more were long, i think we averaged around 205 per game. NOW we have less kicks, we average around 170 per game, that most of them are long, we just have so many less kicks in 2005. If anybody gets that, good on ya.

BUT, i must admit, Sydney averaged the least most of kicks per game this yr, so.

Are you sure about 2002??? Because I would swear on my life that all we did that year was chip, chip, chip that ball around - we'd chip it 5 times and move 10 metres horizontally!!

It drove me insane.

It is a % IS, so the number of possesions is irrelevant.

The long kicks are a % of total kicks.

Yeah...we are so indecisive and lacking of options that we kinda panic and don't have the guts to kick it long....so we stuff around with it.

What about our wizard cup when we were flying high..I wonder Was that a high percentage of long kicks, Jarusa?

Thankyou Jarusa :)

"We have no Carey at Carlton".....when will DP realise this?"

Would be interesting to see how many goals our leading forward would have kicked if the ball was being bombed long every time we entered forward 50

i love it how those that push a certain theory discount all the statistics that support it?

Pagan's still no good...we'd win if we were kicking the ball longer like 2000

Thats the pesky thing about stats, they tend to blow holes in perfectly good thoeries.

Had noticed a lot more medium distance 25 - 35m kicking this year.

I had noticed for the past 4 seasons we have been pretty ordinary, not looking at any stats or anything. Just noticed that we have been pretty ordinary, just a feeling thats all.

I think when people bag Pagan they are saying that we have a tendency to bomb the ball. Despite Jarusa's long kicking stats, I am fairly confident that we are still the longest kicking team in the comp and rank very low in contested marks. This would still uphold the long bomb theory. If someone has stats to prove otherwise I'll be happy to see them. I tried to find them but couldn't...just going on a football record that I saw mid season

In the interests of fairness Mythbuster
Could you kindly compare Carltons long kick per kick ratio over the past 3 years compared to the other 15 clubs.

ie. If Pagan isnt coaching the longest kick per kick team in the AFL, who is? :-D
