I reckon this is a really good punt! Saddington may have one of those
"2nd chance at another club" years
PLUS
"Full year after a reco" years .
Combine the two and he'll hopefully have a beauty....then we can really see where we are with Thornton, Livo and even Teagye as we've really always been pacthing holes with these guys rather than playing them to make a position their own.

Saddington remeber was a good consistant player before he did hes knee. Pick 52 was a bargain for him IMO.

Does anyone know if has fully recoved from the reco? and when i mean recovered i mean is flexibilty and endurance wise?

spot on mate, if it wasnt for his knee, this player would have played in the GF for sydney.

getting him for a fourth rounder is a bargain.

Saddo is exactly what we need.. a 193 cm half back flanker...with a knee reco
You can never have too few of those..when rebuilding a club

Hopefully Teague or Prenda won't need to pick up the 3rd tall forward..

Saddo is just one of many tall defensive options Pagan has now which is a good thing and vastly different to position he was in last year.

Hopefully it can help see Teague regain his '04 form and with Saddington and McLaren in the team hopefully this means Prendergast doesn't reach 63 games (unless he dramatically improves his disposal).

Can't see Prenda wearing navy blue next year unless we're decimated by injury.

Yeah i think you're right budzy. Especially now that they're actually trying to teach DeLuca how to ruck. If Franch and DeLuca are swapping over, theres no room for Prendergast. The mobile ruck role seems to be the one he's done ok at over 2004-2005, but when Pagan tried him as a defender against the Dockers I almost vomited. Been tried so many times, failed. Dont try again.

So you'd rather pick 52 in a weak draft?

Come on Synbad we got a great deal here, Saddington is a good player who will be very handy for us.

Oh hes ok for what we gave... but he isnt what we need...

I think its important for us to bring in what we need and not just take something we dont need cos its cheap.. or a good deal.. just like when you go shopping.. if you have 20 hammers.. and u see one for $5 it doesnt mean you have to buy it does it??

i think he will be handy but can you foresee in 2008:

* Saddington retires after playing much of the season in the seconds. Good solid performer.

* Lucy stars for the Bombers

And we'll think - should we have kept the draft pick for a 10 year player rather than a 3 year player?

We had the chance to get Lucy with pick 36. The recruiting dept obviously didn't rate him enough as we picked up a key back at 20 (Bower) and then a development player (Edwards) with 36 so don't start carrying on that Saddington is the reason we don't have Lucy.

Not sure whose list the critics of Saddington are analysing but it can't be Carlton's. Saying we don't need players of his type is crazy. He's a specialist backman, stands at 193cm and has actually played some decent footy in the past. Our other guys at this height in defence have been tried and have failed ... so I think he's worth a punt. Sydney are paying a big slice of his wages which is another plus.

Unfortunately we don't have 20 190cm+ experienced defenders to pass up on Saddington when we have the chance to get him cheaply.

Can't see him being retired at 28 in 2008 either.

Maybe the AFL need an U23 comp to keep some people interested.

Saddington doesnt play any taller than Sporn.. nor is he faster..

:? :?

Hands up those who think we seriously lack tall (193cm) 95Kg mobile defenders with 140 odd games experience.

Hmmmmm.........because we have an incredible amount of these players just sittin around OO doing nuthin right now.

Seriously though, he'll be another Thornton type which will releive some of the preassure Thornton himself, and Teague felt for the last few years.

Synbad, maybe you're a Livo lover who holds out these fantasies of him being the next SOS. Well, I've got some news, he's 23 yo and has yet to play 50 games.

Let it go, man.

Well hands up those who have seen Saddo play KP for any extended period.
Dunno why you quote stats for weight and height when he doesnt play like that.

What is he is like a taller Sporn Bannister Karl

He wont be playing effectively on the Tredreas or the Halls Gehrigs.

So whats the point???

All he will do is compete with a Bannister/ Sporn for a spot .

Thats after we try him out at CHB and work out what the Swans knew ages ago...

Maybe we should ask Cazzesman on it but all taking Edwards at 36 means is that we thought Edwards was better than Lucy. Looking at his answers in recruitment its clear that they thought Edwards would go and were very happy to have him with the last pick. Doesnt mean anything about Lucy with another draft pick.

I agree with you that we need a tall defender and Saddington will be good for us for a few years I think. But its a shorter-term solution to me, its a fill until Hartlett, Bower and Edwards come through in 2-3 years time.

If your defenders are already as dumb as a box of hammers he'll be a vast improvement!

I never knew our backline was overflowing with talls and we could afford to be picky when recruiting a 142 game veteran.

As for Austin Lucy, I doubt he'd get a game ahead of Saddington, Hartlett, Bower, etc and is a perfect replacement for Sam Hunt at the Scum.
