| Post subject: | Crosswell for the AFL 'Hall of Fame'? |
While remembering our champions when posting in the '10 Greatest Carlton Players of all Time' thread, I checked in the current AFL yearbook for details about Brent 'Tiger' Crosswell'. The obvious place to look seemed to be the 'Hall of Fame' section, but he's not been inducted. Not only was Crosswell an absolute champion and four-time premiership player, he went on to become an outstanding writer on football and sport in general, as well as having an on-going, but so far successful struggle against Menere's disease. The primary criteria for selection are: * Football career record (Crosswell played 222 AFL games) * Ability * Integrity * Sportsmanship * Character It would be reasonable to suggest that Tiger fulfilled these criteria easily. Who are other past Blues champions who should be nominated? What is the process for getting someone proposed? Does anyone else agree with my suggestion of Crosswell? |

Walls. - Club's best CHF till we recruited some guy from SA.Great game in the highest scoring and the best example of high scorig football in a Grand Final I've ever seen 
- Premiership coach - Coached Fitzroy into the finals IIRC and Brisbane into their first ever finals series.Where they nearly upset the 20-2 Blues. - Successfull in Print, TV and Radio with his media work. |

Crosswell is way up there with the greats. He should have been nominated years ago. Who did they nominate last year? I think Barass would rate him as one of the best players he has seen... so on those grounds alone he deserves his place. |

Crosswell, Wallsy, and Swan. 11 premierships amongst this trio. Not one bad GF match. Swan, while being fairly inconsistent throughout the regular season, was a GF specialist. Starred in 1970 (along with Tiger); played well in 1972 (along with Wallsy); aguably kicked the best pressure goal to set up the win, in 1981, in his last match. I reckon Fitzy should be too, if not already. 3 premierships, 2 as captain, and just about BOG in 1981. |

Sticks and Deisel were in as soon as they were eligible. |

Ironically, given he and Barassi sometimes never got on well, he is probably the only player to be coached by Barassi at 3 different clubs. |

I have had this argument elsewhere (and was howled down  ) but I will have another shot at it, but I reckon that Crosswell whilst a mighty finals player and Grand Final Specialist - never reached the heights that he should have.
His talent I believe is equal to that of any of the games immortal players, but his career never reached the heights that it should have. I would rate Wayne Johnston higher - as "The Dominator" was a more consistent player over his entire career home & away and finals. Crosswell was more a big occassion player (not that there is anything wrong with that  ).

Howling.... another way of looking at it Agro is that with thew playters we had back then tiger never ha to extend himself unless this side was up against another good side, then he'd be the spot fire expert, playing wherever he was needed most. In the round to round stuff he was needed so he was unnoticed.

Jarusa i reckon Barass and Tiger had a mutual respect for each other, whether it be on field football games or plain old chess games………….they were 2 competitive beasts. They use the word loosely these days but Tiger was a genuine star! |

Croswell's a pretty fine writer / observer on footy as well - the Age should get him back to write a few specials every now and then. |

Crosswell has been struck down by a couple of health issues which is a shame. On his nickname 'Tiger'.. he got it because he couldnt remember anyones name.. and he would just call everybody "tiger". The other thing about Crosswell is he didnt talk to anyone usually. He would just do what he had to do and leave. He socialised very little with other players. Champion footballer!!! Could have easily played football at a high level today. Right up there with Jezza. I dont see him as a Carlton player though. I see him as one of those football mercenaries(I dont mean that in a bad sense re Crosswell) In those days you either were a Carlton player always .. or you came to Carlton from another club and were a Carlton player. I was probably too young to remember him as a Carlton player. |

Yeah.......... he suffer's from that Vertigo thingy hey Mr Syn.........? the whole balance/spins stuff..........! yes Yonder......he was a great writer and speaker.....very funny........unfortunately....i don't remember him as a footballer......but from what i've seen on the magic picture box........he looked the goods.........! and again........one of those guys i could sit and listen to all day.........! kindest regards tommi pffft...listen to me......."looked the goods"............i don't even know what that means.........! |

missed all bar the last game of 71 season with some virus IIRC. he played the last game that year against c'wood at PP sporting a crew cut (i think barass had got stuck into him again over his long hair). we were 6 goals down at half time and moved crosswell to FF and jezza to CHF. tiger went berserk and we came back (again) to win. he then missed most of '72 with a leg injury, again IIRC. managed to get back late in the season, then broke down again missing out on another flag. he played superbly at CHB in 73, allowing doull to move to a back flank. he just missed out on 100 games (97 games??) and therefore missed selection in our team of the century by not meeting the 100 game criteria. was heartbroken when he was traded to north in 74. |
