Just had a look at the 2006 list compared to the 2005 list and was surprised by a few things.

OLDER

2005 average age 22.48
2006 average age 22.68

If you compare the list today with 2005's list exactly 1 year ago, the current list is actually slightly older.

MORE EXPERIENCED
2005 average games 49.8
2006 average games 52.1

The 2006 list is more experienced on average now than the 2005 list. Hopefully means better footballers on average as well.

TALLER
2005 average height 188cm
2006 average height 189.1cm

Height numbers can be taken with a grain of salt, but if we take these numbers as gospel we have a taller list this year. Last year we had 7 195+cm players on the list, for 2006 we will have 9 (Kennedy and McLaren additions).

BETTER
2005 list average original draft pick 36.9
2006 list average original draft pick 32.5

If you believe that better draft picks means better players then there has been a dramatic improvement across the board with respect to where our list has been picked up in the draft.

I was a bit surprised by this, I thought the list may have been even less experienced and younger this year than last, but the opposite was the case. Actually gives me a bit more optimism than I had before with regards to how the team may perform next year.

Jars, how does that compare to teams who are actually any good?

I'd like to see how our numbers compare to Sydney, Brisbane, Port, Adelaide, and then some also rans as "controls" Collingwood, Essendon*, North.

That will come later when I have updated all the AFL lists. Should be interesting. Well, for me at least.

Not surprising at all Jarusa.

We've kept about 30 players who've all added a year to the overal age of the group and 15-20 games experience each.

The only time you'd expect those averages to go down would be when you have a mass of retirements/axings of older players and replace them all with kids.

Brisbane had the highest average age and games played when they won their last flag.
Port had highest average age when they won their flag and second highest games played (to Brisbane)
Last year the Swans were second highest age (to Port) and second highest games average (to Brisbane)

Does the fact Wiggins, Prenda, Livo and Sporn have played more games now make us any better? I would say probably not.
