Hi all, Love the guy, BUT was asked if I remeber who and in which game Bruce Douyll's headband was ripped off.
My memory has hit a blank...I remember someone pulling it off, running off Doull and dropping it about 15 m away and following the ball. I remember Bruce running, puicking it p and then chasing the guy down and going ballistic trying to snot him...but forthe life of me can't remember who, where, which game etc....

Can anyone help an old guy with the first signs of Altzheimers?

I think it happened twice IIRC -

1977 or 78 Night game vs Hawthorn at VFL Park - not sure who it was.
early 1980's vs Essendon* also at VFL Park - it was Tony Buhagiar.

Harmes you are a legend...
My memory tells me it's an Essendon* game (not Bahagiar though??) and for some reason I kept thinking it may have been Breretton (?) and during a night match...and for the life of me can't see why as I'm positive it was Essendon*.
Makes sense...CarltonVEssendon I would've been at the game (tragically coming from an Ess obsessed family), but I bet the TV keeps replaying the Hawthorn (night match) one....that's why my brain's a muddle....ok! Straight to the neurologist...Thanks again Harmes37

Essendon* game was the 83 elimination final iirc ... buhagiar threw the handband into the crowd at the main scoreboard end at waverley, which is where we were sitting. we all went ballistic!!

night game against hawks in late 70s is where i remember doull totally losing his cool and chasing his opponent.

That 83 match cemented Buhagiar's spot in my all time most hated players hall of fame

Just on Doull trivia, & sorry to hijack the thread bill - but did he play 356 games or 359? You often see different numbers...

Most famous example was a night game in 1977 against Hawthorn (Escort Cup) and the player was Kevin Ablett !

Same with John Nicholls, 331 or 328.

They adjusted them down for state games or something I believe.

AndyLukimitis beat me to it, it was Kevin Ablett.

Vividly recall that night match against the Hawks. The Doormat completely lost his cool which was just not Doully.Only time i ever saw him rattled.
But was the protagonist Kevin Ablett or was it Leon Rice ?Are you guys sure it was Ablett ?

I'm with you Mickstar. Kevin Ablett doesn't sound right.

Don't remeber all the details, but to me Ablett was the Hawthorn guy in the first instance. I'm sure I remember reading on this site, someone saying, that when another player tried the same trick, most likely Buhagiar. Doull simply pulled a spare out of his sock, put it on and continue the game.
Someone in the crowd got a great souvenier, maybe I'm clouded by childhood memories, but I still tell people he's the best player I saw play.

You're half right about Ablett. But it wasn't Kevin, it was his brother - Geoff Ablett. Doully lost it that night and started chasing Abltt, who promptly put on his brown corduroy pants and hightailed it......

SPot on, but it provided one of my greatest football memories, I was pretty close to Doull at the time , and Bruce very calmly reached into his sock and pulled out a spare headband! :-D Classic moment.

Thanks to all...
I couldn't have been at the Waverley escort cup game (wasn't driving!), but I would 've been at the Essendon* one. I'm sure I saw one of the incidents live and the other on the TV.
Funny how your brain and memory sort of mashes them together....
