Whitnall definitely in defence?

It will be a big year for him, either way. he'll either star or be found wanting as opposition coaches try to isloate him on the more athletic forwards.

Depends entirely on the person SB. Anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 years by my reckoning. It took me a long time to recover from my bout in year 12, but starting Uni and all the things that brings may not be the best background for maintaining fitness and working hard to get over it.

took my daughter about 12 months to be fully back to her old self and even now (over a year later) she is far more suseptible to virally thingys. I reckon raso could really struggle this year.

I remember Cliff Stewart (No.39) as a great Carlton wingman who took a long long time to get over Glandular Fever.

Is he going to play as a real CHB or as the Jason Cloke version???
We resigned Lance and now have no where to play him because we have a glut of forwards..we have Lance, Saddington, Livo, Thornton and Teague all down back....where is the structure?..the game is being made quicker and we have decided to add another slow moving player down there....only Carrazzo has leg speed.
Denis cant be serious..you cant have Lance on the likes of Tredrae, Reiwoldt,Brown etc...if you go with the three taller players down back only then someone like Livo is finished..with Bower and Hartlett as potential tall defenders I dont see where Livo is heading...and Lance wont ever be a real CHB....

from CSC discussion on the same thing in response to Elwood saying a similar thing:

I don't think this generalisation is right Elwood. I think Whitnall did very well on Tredrea in 2005, on Richardson in 2005 (albeit for a quarter). We didnt try him on Hall (Livo/Thornton) or Brown (Thornton), but somehow he managed to do OK despite his apparent comparative lack of speed and agility.

I don't buy in to this view that Whitnall is purely an expensive version of Cloke. He was asked to take a man in defence in 2005 and polled a lot of votes in that position.

My concern is that opposition coaches were happy to accept this as Whitnall was out of the forward line, but in 2006 they will structure around it somehow i.e. set up to isolate him on more agile forwards. If Whitnall can't play defence and there's no spot for him up front, as suggested by Pagan, then there's nowhere but down for him.

ps Elwood - we've both posted in two sites. lets argue here, oK?

Does not sound to promising for the young bloke I hope it doesn't hinder his progress in the future . This is one kid you would really like to see work out just for the shear fact we took a gamble on him

he'll be fine but could be very weak for the rest of this year - next year hopefully.

Molsey....happy to debate you on this forum....
190cm, slow moving CHB is this where we want to go with regards to the future and fixing our defense..lets get serious..
Bower is the future CHB, or Hartlett...this is Denis finding somewhere to play his expensive re signed CHF who he doesnt have faith in to do his real job at CHF...we all know Kennedy is what we really need and want at CHF.
When I saw Lance play down back it was in the Jason Cloke mode...picked up the scraps and never really saw him play directly on an opponent....he is too slow to provide an real drive either...how is this fitting in with the play on style the AFL are encouraging..? Dont see Lance running to take the kickins or running to position himself to receive the ball from a kick in...does a player like Livo get sacrificed just so Lance can have a position even though its not really ideal..whats Denis say to Livo....sorry buddy we have to play Lance somewhere especially with the money he is on....good luck in the Bullants....

For the Wizard Cup, I reckon Hartlett will play CHB and Lance will play as a decoy key defender but at the same time play as that loose running type defender.

Lance wasn't a loose man in defence. He played on his man loosley, cutting off angles and leads by playing a few metres off him...and guess what....it worked more often than not.

Yes I'm obviously biased...but this sort of stuff that Lance does is why they keep saying he has a good footy brain. He knows not to go toe to toe and he knows where to put himself when the ball is coming down and where the forward is.....

Don't want to make it a Lance thread...but are people suggesting he had a bad year in defence?

I think the plan may be to let Lance conceed his 3 or 4 goals every week, but try to setup more by rebounding out of D50. Or put him onto the 3rd best forward and try to play off him

You cant be serious guys ? Denis is renown for playing his cards close to his chest and any snippet he divulges right now is meaningless. He will say anything to the press and not meen a single word.Good job to i say.I reckon if Hartlett stands up at CHB,then Lance is a monty to go forward.
