Kaxta's comments in the NAB thread re missing the match due to a wedding got me to thinking about THOSE events. The ones that pop up on footy days that you simply cannot get out of.

Whether it was work that caused it, or some non footy fanatical bride & groom, most of us have had the odd match that still makes us cringe years later knowing we weren't there!!

My standout's probably the day Sticks kicked 10 against the Dogs in 95 - I think it was Easter & I had a family thing on. I remember also missing that great come from behind win over St Kilda at Waverley in 92 - I was hungover or something that day.

On a positive note though, I had a work thing on the day we lost the final to Melb in 2000...thank god

What are yours?

Not that I was likely to be there in person in any case, but I would have been nice and comfortable on the couch all the same…

99 PF.

It was my sister in laws wedding … she's divorced now.

Missed the 1979 Grand Final due to not being born at the time. Was NOT happy when I found out the result before even watching the replay. :x

On the flip side, I told my girlfriend when she booked her engagement that it was the same night as the Wizza cup grand final. If Carlton by some miracle made the granny I wouldn't be attending their party.

I went to the Wizza and still dont regret it :-D

The 2 that standout for me are the Essendon* game in 2000 when we were down by heaps and ended up losing by about 16 points. Lance took 17 marks that day. I was at a wedding, just about fell out of the church with my radio only to hear we were behind by about 10 goals.

The second is the Brisbane game in 2001 where we flogged them. I had my wisdom teeth out the day before. Was close to going, but decided against it when I couldn't get anyone to come along with me.

What an insult.

That's like Simon Beaumont trying to show you how to kick a drop punt with your left foot.

I missed a saints game in the early 90's. I went to board an aircraft carrier in Freo and had the game on the radio. Plugger kicked 12 to half time and they were towelling us up. I went with a mate who is a rabid saints supporter and we had the game on the radio for the drive down to Freo. He was giving me so much shit as we boarded the carrier at half time.

We didn't manage to get the score on the way home, and I later found out that we'd shifted Dora onto Plugger in the second half, held him goaless and won the game. I missed out on hanging shit on my mate as he went underground for the next week.

I think Plugger had 6 to half-time

Two matches stand out.

My father and I (I was 10 years old) went to the MCG on the day of the 1970 GF to see if we could scalp some tickets. The best we could find were $45 a seat and $15 for standing. That (20 or 30 times face value) was way too much for my dad, so we went home and listened to the match on the radio.

(At least I did; my father gave up listening at half-time. I spent the first 10-15 minutes of the 3rd quarter calling out to my father every time we’d kicked another goal. He soon got the message and was back by the radio. Years later I was telling this to the girl who’d become my wife. She’s also a Carlton fan and she said the exact same thing happened at her home. I’m betting that it was a day in which a lot of 9 and 10 year olds showed their fathers what true Club Loyality is about.)

In Feb 1986 I nominated to get a travel grant to attend a convention (to be held in England in August 1987). My wife and I decided that should I get the grant we’d take the opportunity to travel around Europe for three months (a school term, as my wife was then a teacher). When we looked at the calendar to see when we’d be away I noticed that we wouldn't be in Melbourne for The Last Saturday in September.

“If we go Carlton will win the 1987 Grand Final,â€

99 prelim :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

I was near dead in bed with a virus and couldn't get my head off the pillow. Mrs Caz went and left me to see the game god bless her blue socks.

I woke up and turned the radio on just as Murphy took the mark and Eddie McChins was going off his nut screaming....

CARLTON IS GOING TO WIN, CARLTON IS GOING TO WIN!!!!!!!!

I thought I was delirious. The vid was good to watch atleast.

Regards Cazzesman
