Here is a graph of the cumulative points margin of all original VFL teams (except Fitzroy). If your team is +10,000 points that means they have scored that many more points than all the teams they have played against. The Years represented are not exact for each team due to some teams playing far fewer finals than others (i.e. St Kilda). It's a bit messy but you get the idea.

At the moment Collingwood sits on top (thanks to Carlton's poor form in recent years) and the Saints are on the bottom with some catching up to do.

As you can see the Blues managed to gain top spot from Collingwood for a while but have only just lost top spot recently due mainly to Carlton's poor performances.

Love it!

We will re-assume our rightful #1 spot in the near future. 8)

Great graph! Given Collingwoods dominance over such a time you really would expect them to be in the lead with the stat that counts.... number of premierships. Graph says a lot about their finals and grand finals records..

And the most frustrating thing is we were well ahead of Collingwood in 2000, 2001, then the fall......

I really enjoyed that peak of Geelong's in the early late 80s early 90s when blighty had them kicking 30 a game.

Jars, I'm surprised no-one has called you on your statement of "All original VFL teams" given that you've included North and Hawthorn, who joined the VFL in 1925.

That was great footy to watch.

Loved Blight's "if we kick more goals we win" philosophy.

And Richmond (1908) But I susprect ol' Jars means teams that were playing when the final 5 came into effect. 80-odd years is more than enough to check out anyway.

Wouldn't have minded seeing Fitzroy there either.

Something like this should be used by Psychologists and Psychiatrists all across the footy world to diagnose conditions of their patients. It explains so much-

* it is so easy to forget on current performance that the Pies are an OK team. This line shows how dominant they must have been for so long except in actually winning the thing at the end. Great history for them
* Bombers are always thereabouts and this shows it, but to be equal in permierships with us and down a fair bit on this long term scale shows that they must grow a new leg in finals. 1993 is a good example of this. 1999 isn't : )
* St Kilda fans just must hate everyone and their positive histories. Their line just continues to go down & down and down until the last few years. This must be why they try and shout down any refernce to your good history because they don't have one - so if they don't have one, no one else should have one. They need their current batch of players to be goof until they are 50 to get anywhere near even. Would be interesting to know how many seasons of Carlton only thrashings it would take for them to get level again...
* Richmond should have pride but can't as they must forget how to express it with a line like this. they must have this torrent of energy ready to sprout as soon as they look like finals performers, oh yeah, it's called the bandwagon!

great work Jarusa this is fuel for many more weeks to come.

I like that analysis AtW.

It does give a pretty succint overview of each clubs history.

I like the synergy of what happened in 1969 where Carlton broke away from Essendon* and the Kangaroos broke away from St Kilda.
