The taller you are at Carlton the more gentle you play...

As someone who plays the game weekly, and as someone who get hit about the head quite a bit, the last thing on my mind is "where are my fearless leaders to help me out?????" :shock:

It's a man's game...not school boy footy...just a pity the "fans" don't realise this.

Play hard or go home did I hear? EXACTLY!! Either take the knocks, get up and keep on playing, or stay on the ground sooking like a baby until Daddy comes along to stand up for you...

When I played footy it was an unwritten rule that you flew the flag for your team-mates. What exactly do you mean by "that sort of crap"?
If one of your teammates is taken out of the game unfairly then what's wrong with letting the guy know about it within the rules? The way you're crapping on you'd think I was talking about king-hits behind play.

I think I've mentioned it before, but the captain of my side last year showed what true leadership is after being floored, getting to his knees and being crunched again very hard...he got straight up and got the ball. No thuggery, no whinging, no tanties.

You expect to be hit playing footy. There are one or two thugs who go looking for a fight, but for the most part the tough players take the knocks and get up and go again. No need for playing silly buggers unless you're a bogan from *insert appropriate suburb*.

I wanted to know other's thoughts... Last night I admit I was quite a bit disappointed by one incident when Kade Simpson was flattened by a wayward head high tackle by the king of head high tackles, Darren Milburn. My disappointment stemmed from the fact that no one raced in to help Simmo or even to fly the flag and tell Milburn exactly what kind of thug he is. Scotland had a bit of a bumpity bumps with him once Milburn had walked off, but more or less, Simmo must have been wondering where the big fearless leaders were to help him off the deck. Sure, the resultant 50m penalty to Stevens for a 9pt goal was handy, but more importantly is knowing your mates are there to back you up. So, would you expect some above board remonstrating to have taken place under those circumstances? I know that the club can ill afford melee's and certainly one didnt need to take place, but one of Kouta, Stevens, Whitnall or Fev (if he was on the ground then)... someone should have been in there in a flash to have a say, wouldnt you think? Maybe i'm just being over the top but the fact nobody at all did anything to me says something about the type of leadership on display.

there was one bit in the second quater when someone hit murphy high, Fev came in a defended him and hit or pushed the guy so i thought that was pretty good by Fev protecting murph who is new.

Ah I must say I didn't see that. In that case, Fev must have been off the ground when Simmo got whacked otherwise he probably would have thrown his humungous shoulders around.

Great point tekno. I constantly find myself questioning the leadership at Carlton. I have been an optimist for years, telling myself it will get better just wait. But now i just cant see it. The quality that we have out on the park is not good enough its as simple as that. Therefore the veterans, the leaders, should be guiding the way showing the young guys exactly the way the game should be played. Which i believe includes giving whoever hits one of our guys a hit back. There should be a rule. If someone blatantly hits a carlton footballer they get hit back. Then atleast we will establish a kind of fear in the other teams perhaps. I dont no im searching for anything here. But if we cant win matches atleast we should be scaring a shit load of guys in the process. It should be our motto: GO HARD OR GO HOME! I believe toughness be it physical or mental, is the key to success. And at the moment we dont possess any of these! MB

Nah.. we have sensational leaders.. the envy of all other clubs. Kouta 6b ft 4 and 100 kilos. Lance 6ft 3.7563 and sometimes at 100 kgs... but these two never .. ever show any physicality... Then there is Barney ... a real gentle giant... and Deluca... hes a nice boy too... The taller you are at Carlton the more gentle you play...

Aint that the truth, the level of agro in our players seems to be inversely proportional to their height, hence us having to rely on Hulmey to be our enforcer

Yeah we're pretty soft in that regard. Remember against Adelaide in a final at the G a few years ago Ricciutto nearly took Campo's head off, Allan came to Campo's defence and was throwing Roo around like a stuffed dummy. Those were the days.

i'm 6'3" and 96 kgs if i was lucky enough to ever wear a carlton jumper and one of my mates was flattened or a filthy scumbag opposition player looked at one of my team mates the wrong way - i would be the first one in to their defence. I can not understand the lack of pride in the jumper and that is the one most frustrating thing from our last few years , i can forgive skill errors and to an extent poor decision making. That can be written off as learning and development but lack of pride, passion and controlled anger towards the oppostion is inexcusable and makes me want to flatten an opposition player even more. Have some @#$%&! pride in the jumper and the clubs history , stick up for each other ,until we do we will continue to be the laughing stock.

Agree with Teckno...Simpson was hung out to dry by his teammates when Milburn have him some attention and its the same old story no protection or cover for our little blokes. Synbads right..French , Deluca, Kouta etc are nice blokes but they have no idea about looking after their teammates or flying the flag... Good on Fev for going into bat for MM but there needs to be more of it..Milburns a good footballer but a bully boy and I cant wait for the day when we get a player who can give some of his own back with interest....any wonder Brisbane won three flags, they had the skillful players but also had the protectors/enforcers to provide them with cover...

The trouble is, the game moves so quickly these days you can't afford to have your good players continually embroiled in spot fires. If every time something like what happened to Simpson occurred all our senior players got into a scuffle, we'd be even worse than we already are. Take the hit, get up and go get the ball.

I'm with Wojee...you stick up for your teammates ...no one is talking about king hitting players..just letting certain offenders like Milburn know that when they dish it out they cop it back with interest.... part of Milburns game is to get under players skin and he luvs it, its been going onto long, he needs dealing with.....I' d like to see Barnaby step up to the plate and look after his smaller teammates....

Eddie got pinged 50m for pinching a players jumper with his thumb and index finger - Now, you get a free kick and a 50m penalty which results in a 9 point goal. If anybody had of come in and pushed shitface over the kick would be reversed possibly costing us 18 pooints. Sometimes restraint is the best form of leadership.
