Well I don't quite see it as flak. Just take it as being that Demitriou is looking for ways he can extricate himself from the perilous state he has put us in. Problem is that in order to rescue us (and I really don't believe he wants us to die), he has to do it:

1. without looking weak in the eyes of the other clubs
2. In a manner which doesn't make it look as though we are being 'forgiven' for salary cap cheating
3. In a fashion which makes it appear as though assistance to Carlton is in the best interests of the whole AFL

Special assistance in the terms provided to Melbourne, the Doggies, and the Kangaroos doesn't meet the above objectives. Hence his statement that clubs would have a right to be curious if we received it. Taking over the lease at Princes Park in the event that the MCC holds the AFL to ransom, or that the new owners of Telstra Dome are not football friendly just 'might' give him an out though.

We're certainly getting a lot of press for "cellar dwellers".
