For those who may not have heard it, Demetriou had something of interest to say about Carlton this afternoon on ABC radio.

He was asked the question:

"Andrew, from a personal viewpoint, what are the two things you want to get out of this coming year?"

He thought for a moment about it and answered (I'm paraphrasing):

"Firstly, ensuring that the AFL is putting everything in place to invest in the future of the game's long-term health. Secondly, to help the Carlton Football Club get back into a strong position. They're a great club, and important to the competition, and we need to do all we can to help them out of their current plight/".

Nice to know that our club's wellbeing is uppermost in AD's mind, and came up in conversation unprompted. Perhaps an AFL announcement on the Princes Park lease mightn't be too far off? Let's hope so.

Perhaps they want 80,000 plus crowds at the G again.

Well, judging by his first comment, at least he seems to have learnt a bit about looking ahead with the decisions he makes. Something clearly not done in the past. ;)

Choking on his afternoon tea I presume.

Mrs AGRO: "OH MY GAWD!"

There are a lot of things Carlton needs right now and patronising slop from Demetrispew is not one of them.

The only reason and I repeat the only reason "The Spew" is thinking this way is that he knows he has to deliver 8 games every weekend to ensure he doesn't fall foul with the TV Rights consortium.

Its the AFL that can't afford Carlton to fall over as they will be sued to the shithouse by the consortium.

You have no altruistic motives at all.

Go @#$%&! yourself Demetrispew - you are a self serving fat cauliflower - make no mistake when you take a walk in public you should turn around often and look behind you, very often.

Maybe we are all just a 'tad' paranoid on this forum and perhaps we have misjudged the 'spew' all along? 8)

I think a lot of people are missing the point.

Sure, Demetriou's never going to win any popularity contests around the CFC. But the fact is that we've dug ourselves an extremely big hole (the AFL didn't tell us to build that stupid stand - in fact they strongly advised against it. the AFL didn't cheat the salary cap - we did) and we're faced with two choices:

tell 'em to go and get stuffed, and pretty much add another 7 years of financial misery onto our plate. Thus weakening the club's position in the medium to long term.

or grit our teeth and work with them. Not because they're suddenly our best friends, but because they actually run the competition, control the money and have an awful lot of sway with the state government in Victoria.

The very interesting thing about yesterday's radio conversation was not that Demetriou talked about Carlton's plight, but that he (unprompted) raised the task of getting Carlton back on the right track as one of HIS two key motivators for the year.

He's personally staking his reputation on doing this, and has just publically stated our ongoing health as one of his major KPI's.

There are myriad reasons for this, undoubtedly. But all that sort of stuff is just one big red herring. He's the sort of person who'll do exactly what it takes to appear successful. If our immediate and future health is one of his KPI's, then bring it on!

Now, the bloke's never going to make my christmas card list, but I have to say that hearing AD say that pretty much made my week.

Some people have started questioning Carlton's worth in the competition, and whether or not we're as 'safe' as we always assumed. I think AD's statements tell us that the AFL executive understands Carlton's importance to the competition.

This is a good thing. A very good thing.
