Didn't get to see/hear it all, first half intermittent, then 3rd quarter 3LO and final quarter fox footy, but what really seemed extraordinary was the backline.... Livo, Thornton, Mcgrath, Big Red, Skinny, Sporn, and 1AW, all seemd to play slashing individual games, but also teamed really well together. There was always support; two on one or three on two. It made for great pressure, and if we'd taken all our chances, it would've been an extremely good win.... Where do we fit Saddington? Was Teague a starter? |

Who gets the job on Pav next week? Bit to agile/quick for Livo? T-Bird more suited to the third defender. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thornton has lost it I reckon Didn't look right at all tonight and needs a rest in the 2s. Needs to be re-energised. |

started that way PJ but I thought he got better as the night wore on. The back six were very strong tonight - played as a unit - something I haven't seen for 5 years i reckon! pavlich hmmmm Walker maybe? |

Thornton hasn't been right since he injured his knee in the Wizard Cup final last year. Thought he'd get over it with a preseason to get back to full fitness, but he made a lot of errors early, he did improve as the game went on though. |

The pressure in the middle was great also the forward line help out in the midfield as well.Call it flooding if you like.Lappin and Walker were terrific running the ball.Simpson,Stevo and Scotland did great jobs in this area as well. Thornton restricted Robbo to 2 goals .Robertson was shit and Thornton did his job well.Who said he was shit was watching a different game. Thornton should play on Medhurst. Livo to get and Mcpharlin Walker on Farmer and Pavlich I dont know.Had probably his worst game today and will be out to redeem himself on Sat night. |

Glad someone brought this up. Our back six cop a heap of shit at the best of times, but I thought they were pretty damn solid tonight. Melbs never looked like kicking a winning score. At half time when Davey was their leading goal scorer (and lets face it, they were pretty soft) I was pretty confident we would go on with it. If Waitey had kick straight it would never have been in doubt. |

Thornton is our best bet for Pavlich. He has to get first crack as he is a horrible match up for Livo or Lance. |

Once the backline is settled,Carlton will do well,it take years to built one and maybe we starting to get one,but Saddington is a definite starter, i think when ready, maybe Lappin will go forward or Whitnall unless Thornton or Livingston drop away,i hope they dont as they both have size, just both need to attack the ball harder.David Teague could be in a bit of trouble especially if Saddington and Livingston do well and Hartlett gets in the team as Mcgrath,Carazzo play in the backline a lot also. |

That's good to hear! ![]() He did the same thing the week before we played them last year at Subi & had a blinder after Walls wrote an article about him. Is he going to do that again?! |

There seems to be a pretty good understanding between all those blokes down back. They back each other up and are always available to take the handball in traffic. We will still be tested out by the high quality power and small forwards, but Neitz/Robbo are no gumps. |

Walker on Pavlich guys, Pavlich's strong suit playing forward is marking on the lead with his pace and agility. So unless you want Waite to head down there and Lance to go forward... wait no, that's a game plan - we don't have those. ![]() |

I thought the backline was ok but helped by having great midfield pressure.....McPharlin, Pavlich, J Longmuir, Farmer and Medhurst though will be a bit of a challenge...... I would play Livo on McPharlin....Walker on Pavlich....McGrath on Medhurst.....and use Mclaren on Longmuir and Sandilands....Carazzo on Farmer.. Bret Thornton would be my trouble shooter if those matchups come unstuck...hate playing Walker on Pavlich but I feel Walkers athletic ablity is what we need...Pavlich may out muscle him but I feel Walker will at least be able to get to most contests and make Pavlich work when we have the ball... Byron Schammer will pick up Mark Murphy IMO.......Freo are playing for their coaches career and at home it will a tough assignment for our backline... |

Not sure what else Thornton needs to do. He was solid, albeit he started a little shakily. No Melbourne forward particularly dominated on the day and all our backmen contributed to moving the ball forward. Best display from the back 6 for a longtime. Next week? Probably Thornton on Pavlich. Livo may get Longmuir now that Sandilands is rucking most of the time. McPharlin IMO is the hardest matchup for us to get right. Walker on either Farmer or Medhurst - 2 guys that have given us trouble in the past because of their pace. |

Saddington should be brought in for debut, freo's forward line is the fastest in the comp. Pav, McPharlin, Medhurst and Farmer - there's only room for one slow poke in defense and Lance earnt that spot ahead of Teague last night. Corey on Farmer, Carrots on Medhurst and let training form dictate who gets the big blokes out of Livo, Thornton and Saddo |
