No one wanted a bar of Anzac Day until Collingwood and Essendon* ran with it. Now everyone wants to share in the spoils. Carlton and Richmond aside no other two teams are capable of drawing that kind of crowd.
Melbourne vs Hawthorn for the 'Dork Cup' isn't going to draw the attention and 90,000 people. They're not there because its Anzac Day. They're there to see Essendon* and Collingwood.
Can someone please tell me why we have to get a capacity crowd (i.e. in the vicinity of 90,000 people) to an Anzac Day match? If the Bulldogs and the Kangaroos played in front of 60,000 on Anzac Day then who cares? At least they have the opportunity then to grow their brands. People have the foolish idea that an Anzac Day match is a competition to see how many people we can squeeze into one ground.

Collingwood and Essendon* gain more than the crowd at the game. It is the exposure... one day, one game, build-up, national TV audience, etc.
Do you think the tradtion and the brand promotion is going to be there in front of 45,000 at a Bulldogs Kangaroos game? The atmosphere comes with a big crowd combined with a big occassion.
Its not a competition to get the biggest crowd, but a packed stadium is essential for the atmosphere.
I said 60,000 at a Bulldogs vs. Kangaroos game. Why did you downgrade me to 45,000?
The Bulldogs and Kangaroos are fighting to retain the tradition of their clubs. This is just one of the reasons why these clubs can not get enough exposure, enough supporters, enough sponsorship and enough money to be able to fight in the big league.
Carlton has a similar problem. We don't get enough exposure because we played at Princes Park for too long and Channel 9 didn't want to go out there.
OK. Take the Bulldogs and the Kangaroos out of it because one will eventually relocate to the Gold Coast/Brisbane and the other will relocate to Sydney.
Imagine St.Kilda vs Geelong on Anzac Day. Why not? It would be a more quality game than today. It is only fair that they have an opportunity to get the exposure and corresponding gate receipts and sponsorship dollars.
