| Post subject: | Priority Picks |
What exactly are the new rules regarding priority picks. Is it if a team wins less than 5.5 games they get a priority pick, but the pick is taken after the first round Or is it if a team wins less than 10 games over two years thye get a priority pick, like we did last year, and this is taken before the first round? If it is the latter, would we be entitled to one if we won 4 games, given we got one last year? What exactly are the rules? |

Taken from the Age, November last year ONE poor season no longer will be sufficient for a double dip at the best talent in the country under a radical revamp of the eligibility criteria for AFL priority picks. The extravagant reward for failure currently conferred on clubs enduring one poor year has been all but abolished under the changes announced by the AFL yesterday. Clubs winning no more than four games in a season from next year will be eligible for a priority pick taken after the completion of the first round of the national draft. If the club has successive poor years of no more than 16 points in each of those seasons — not averaged over the course of those seasons — the priority pick will be taken, as it is now, before the national draft. |

right... so four wins this season gets us picks 1 and 2 in the best draft since 2001. Not that I'm starting up the tanking debate in April though |

Convenient isn't it? |

Convenient isn't it? It was the right decision to reduce it to 16 points. The last three seasons proven it is too easy for clubs to manufacture a 20 point season. |

It's gone from easy to being down right impossible. Having only five wins or under two seasons in a row would still limit use of the priority pick to maybe one every two or three years while actually helping clubs that actually need it. Has any team in history ever won only four games two seasons in a row? |

I agree that 20 points needs to stand as the limit per season, the question is, will the AFL realise the error in their ways and switch the rule in time? @#$%&! I hope so. |

I think we've seen the last of those kind of seasons as everyone now embraces the draft or floods to bring the game to their level. You'd be hard pressed to think of any club bar ours who would look likely for only 4 wins for the season, and even we're on the borderline for that. |

Isn't it amazing how 2 of the bottom 3 sides last year are now in the top 4. What an amazing turn around it is when all of a sudden priority picks are not up for grabs. We have been f*cked (excuse my language) over again by the AFL and this will further prolong our turn around and rebuilding phase. |

We have been f*cked (excuse my language) over again by the AFL and this will further prolong our turn around and rebuilding phase. If we do fall that low this we definitely have been dudded by the AFL compared to Hawthorn and Collingwood who did tank their way to an unwarranted priority pick. But I wouldn't be counting on those sides to be there come the end of the year because it's still early and a long season. Where were the Tigers placed this time last year? Can we make a submission to the AFL for a PP before the 1st round or would that be sending a bad message? |

What the AFL have done with the new PP rules is the extra penalties that "The Spew" and "Rotten Ron" wanted to stick into us on Black Friday 2002 and didn't, claiming that they actually treated us lightly. |

We won't land a PP because we have depth unlike last year and kids coming through to give us a boost. But picks 1, 17 and 18 in this draft is very good and we could find a Thomas or Kennedy in that round according to someone I'm not going to link to. |
