What i dont understand is with all that cheque book recruiting we did.. and no real restraints how come we usually had a heap of duds in our team. Why bother taking Denis Collins or Rod Galt or Reid from other clubs???

Would that be because the whole cheque book football thing was a bit of a furphy?

Apart from the Kernahan/Motley/Bradley/Dorotich raid, what other specific examples of chequebook footy are there?

Barrassi I guess is one. Greg Williams another... I'm starting to struggle after that....

Hows Johnny Plattens car from te Carlton football club sound.???.. by the way he kept it.... BASTARD!!!

..........and David Rhys Jones???

Howabout when Robert Menzies organised for Jezzza to by pass North and come to Carlton???

You have no clue do you???

Ease up big fella. I was only asking the question.

You need to lay off the caffeine.

No you actually called it a furphy...

It wasnt...its us using the system of the time better than everybody else.. so we were always one step ahead.

Note the question mark Synbad. That meant I was asking a question, not making a statement.

CAN WE GET AN ENGLISH TEACHER IN HERE?

Jarusa you really dont have to tell the whole wide world you are what you eat and you love bananas..

You dont have to ask people questions about digging up who our rising star nominees are to just illustrate that we have more rising star nominees today than when we were a powerhouse club.. and then somehow join the dots to portray is as a powerhouse team again...

Thats just being a funster.

We all know you could have dug those nominees up yourself.. you live for that...

On cheque book recruiting we even got hammered for it on Black Friday.. what do you mean is is a furphie??lol

By the way i have worked out what O`Reilly cost us..

the first and third round pick we traded.

one priority pick.
two first round picks.(three all up)
two second round pick.
one third round pick.(two all up)
one fourth round pick.

one pre season draft pick (top 3)

plus a million dollars ..

plus his wages..

plus our pride...

Plus if you read all that and take it... then look at all the oter ridiculous trades for our picks we have made over the years it doesnt take Einstein to work out how were [REDACTED]!!!..

and how far back we are and need to catch up ...
Most expensive trade of all time...!!!

I thought we'd moved on? I asked a question and got an answer. I agree with you, it's not a furphy.

Now feel free to scoot off and hijack some other thread to discuss your precious priority picks.

I posted this in 2003 on TBV

Congrats Waitey on the award this week.

Got me thinking which club has had the most nominees etc.

Here are some results from the 232 rounds of football that have been voted on.

Hawthorn 19
Essendon* 18
Fremantle 17
West Coast Eagles 16
Richmond 15
Bulldogs 14
Geelong 14
St Kilda 14
Collingwood 13
Sydney 13
Carlton 12
Melbourne 12
Port Adelaide 12
Adelaide 11
Brisbane Lions 11
Kangaroos 10
Fitzroy 6
Bears 5

Carltons 12 winners were

Year Round Player
1993 18 Ang Christou
1994 6 James Cook
1994 18 Troy Bond
1995 2 Scott Camporeale
1995 15 Adrian Whitehead
1997 1 Lance Whitnall
1998 10 Darren Hulme
1998 20 Kris Massie
1999 3 Brett Backwell
2000 20 Ryan Houlihan
2003 3 Trent Sporn
2003 10 Jarrad Waite
Additionaly Corey Mckernan, Andrew Eccles and David Gallagher (unbelievable) all won the award at other clubs.

Check out the filth's rising star list - They got rid of most of them didn't they

1993 13 Saverio Rocca
1994 8 Kent Butcher
1994 22 Jon Hassall
1996 7 Andrew Schauble
1997 18 Mal Michael
1999 5 Nick Davis
1999 18 Paul Licuria
2000 3 Damien Adkins
2000 6 Josh Fraser
2001 4 Ryan Lonie
2002 6 Jason Cloke
2002 10 Mark McGough
2002 16 Alan Didak

I think that the most dangerous rising star list comes from Essendon*. Quite imposing and some really good players who served them well.

1993 4 Joe Misiti
1993 8 James Hird
1993 9 Dustin Fletcher
1993 19 Rick Olarenshaw
1993 20 Mark Mercuri
1994 1 Che Cockatoo-Collins
1994 19 Scott Cummings
1995 12 Ryan O'Connor
1996 19 Matthew Lloyd
1997 13 Blake Caracella
1998 21 Jason Johnson
1999 7 Dean Rioli
1999 11 Dean Solomon
1999 13 Mark Johnson
2000 5 Adam Ramanauskas
2001 6 Aaron Henneman
2001 8 Danny Jacobs
2001 11 Mark McVeigh

Hawthorn on the other hand have had the most rising stars and I reckon they are mostly duds except for the first fellow (and the bloke who went to Brisbane

1993 2 Shane Crawford Hawthorn
1994 10 Mark Graham Hawthorn
1994 20 Rayden Tallis Hawthorn
1995 4 Nick Holland Hawthorn
1996 10 Daniel Chick Hawthorn
1997 17 Brad Scott Hawthorn
1997 22 Angelo Lekkas Hawthorn
1998 5 Jonathan Hay Hawthorn
1998 16 Jade Rawlings Hawthorn
1998 18 Trent Croad Hawthorn
1999 14 Nathan Thompson Hawthorn
2000 11 Glen Bowyer Hawthorn
2001 10 Brett Johnson Hawthorn
2001 22 Steven Greene Hawthorn
2002 15 Luke Hodge Hawthorn
2002 17 Nick Ries Hawthorn
2002 22 Campbell Brown Hawthorn
2003 1 Sam Mitchell Hawthorn
2003 6 Michael Osborne Hawthorn

St Kildas list is good for a laugh no good talent until the started winning spoons and getting priority picks

1993 1 Peter Everitt St Kilda
1993 11 Brodie Atkinson St Kilda
1994 12 Shane Wakelin St Kilda
1995 9 Austinn Jones St Kilda
1995 14 Joel Smith St Kilda
1999 22 Lenny Hayes St Kilda
2000 16 Brett Moyle * St Kilda
2001 5 Caydn Beetham St Kilda
2001 7 James Begley St Kilda
2001 14 Justin Koschitski St Kilda
2002 5 Nick Riewoldt St Kilda
2002 7 Xavier Clarke St Kilda
2003 2 Luke Ball St Kilda
2003 7 Brendon Goddard St Kilda

Check out the Tigers nominees - No-one of note since 1993 when Kellaway & Richo got the nod. Not surprised that they always finish 9th.

1993 10 Matthew Richardson
1993 15 Duncan Kellaway
1994 11 Matthew Rogers
1994 15 Jamie Tape
1994 24 Duncan Kellaway
1995 5 David Bourke
1995 21 Stephen Jurica
1997 2 Joel Bowden
1997 20 Robert Powell
1998 15 Justin Plapp
1999 16 Marc Dragicevic
2001 18 Aaron Fiora
2002 8 David Rodan
2002 14 Mark Coughlan
2002 20 Ty Zantuck

Very surprised that the Kangaroos have only had 10 nominees considering their success on field - Quite a good bunch though

1993 12 Glen Archer
1994 2 Corey McKernan
1995 11 Matthew Capuano
1995 13 Stuart Anderson
1996 5 Adam Simpson
1996 17 Peter Bell
1998 3 Byron Pickett
1998 6 Evan Hewitt
2000 7 Adam Lange
2001 2 Daniel Harris

I think that Geelongs stars are the most overrated. Apart from King none have achieved much and most are still on the list

1993 22 Leigh Colbert
1995 22 Aaron Lord
1996 13 Craig Biddiscombe
1996 15 Steven King
1997 6 Adam Houlihan
1997 16 Carl Steinfort
1998 12 James Rahilly
1998 22 Darren Milburn
2000 2 David Spriggs
2000 18 Matthew Scarlett
2001 12 Cameron Ling
2001 20 Corey Enright
2002 4 James Bartel
2002 12 James Kelly

The Demons Rising stars are a fairly talented yet underachieving bunch. We would gladly take most of these players on the Carlton list. Probably makes their lack of success even more inexplicable as I really rate most of these guys

1993 6 David Neitz
1993 14 Darren Kowal
1996 11 Adem Yze
1996 21 Jeff Farmer
1997 10 Shane Woewodin
1998 8 Travis Johnstone
1998 14 Russell Robertson
1999 4 Troy Longmuir
2000 8 Cameron Bruce
2000 15 Matthew Whelan
2000 19 Brad Green
2002 3 Steven Armstrong

I may as well keep going.

The Bullies - talented honest blokes who should be doing better than they are -

1993 5 Scott West
1993 17 Ilija Grgic
1993 21 Brad Nicholson
1994 16 Danny Southern
1995 1 Tyson Lane
1995 7 Brad Johnson
1995 17 Daniel Hargraves
1996 3 Luke Darcy
2001 9 Luke Penny
2001 15 Daniel Giansiracusa
2001 16 Robert Murphy
2002 9 Shane Birss
2002 11 Ryan Hargrave
2002 18 Jordan McMahon

The Lions/Bears benefited from years of early draft choices. If they didn't lie down in 1998 with all their talent then I'll go hee

1994 3 John Barker Fitzroy
1994 5 Jarrod Molloy Fitzroy
1994 13 Simon Hawking Fitzroy
1994 21 Chris Johnson Fitzroy
1996 1 Matthew Primus Fitzroy
1996 8 Nick Carter Fitzroy
1993 3 Nathan Chapman Bears
1993 7 Nathan Buckley Bears
1994 7 Chris Scott Bears
1994 14 Matthew Clarke Bears
1995 6 Steve Lawrence Bears
1997 8 Daniel Bradshaw
1998 2 Luke Power
1999 1 Shane O'Bree
1999 9 Simon Black
1999 17 Luke Power
1999 21 Tim Notting
2000 13 Beau McDonald
2001 1 Damien Cupido
2001 19 Robert Copeland
2002 21 Jamie Charman
2003 4 Jared Brennan

I don't know how the Crows ever won 2 flags with rising stars such as Eccles & Gallagher. Go Figure. They also seem to have traded all their really good young talent - Wellman, Johnson, Vardy

1993 16 Mark Ricciuto
1994 17 Matthew Kluzek
1994 23 Sean Wellman
1995 3 Martin McKinnon
1995 20 Andrew McLeod
1997 12 Kane Johnson
1997 15 Peter Vardy
1998 19 Andrew Eccles
1999 6 David Gallagher
1999 10 Brett Burton
2000 12 Ian Perrie

Some real guns in the Swans list of RS nominees - maybe only just starting to click

1995 8 Michael OÕLoughlin
1995 19 Justin Crawford
1996 6 Shannon Grant
1996 18 Daniel McPherson
1997 9 Stefan Carey
1997 11 Troy Cook
1998 11 Jason Saddington
1998 17 Jared Crouch
1999 2 Adam Goodes
1999 20 Ben Mathews
2000 9 Jude Bolton
2002 19 Tadhg Kennelly
2003 5 Adam Shneider

Look at the eagles nominees and you willunderstand why they are emerging as a force again. Have managed to grow these guys into a good core team

1994 4 Brett Spinks
1994 9 Drew Banfield
1995 18 Fraser Gehrig
1996 9 Jarrad Schofield
1996 12 Ben Cousins
1996 16 Chad Morrison
1997 14 Michael Braun
1997 19 Michael Gardiner
1998 1 Michael Braun
1999 8 Rowan Jones
1999 12 Andrew Williams
2000 14 Andrew Embley *
2000 21 Chad Fletcher
2001 3 Daniel Kerr
2002 2 Chris Judd
2003 8 Ashley Sampi

I guess when you have a moratorium in your state and constantly finish near the bottom you will secur some of the best young talent in the land.
The trick is keeping them at the club which Which the Dockers have found very hard to do

1995 10 Shaun McManus
1995 16 Craig Callaghan
1996 2 Daniel Bandy
1996 4 Greg Harding
1996 14 Kingsley Hunter
1996 20 Luke Toia
1996 22 Craig Callaghan
1997 5 Heath Black
1998 4 Jess Sinclair
1999 15 Andrew Shipp
2000 1 Paul Hasleby
2000 4 Leigh Brown
2000 17 Matthew Pavlich
2001 13 Adam McPhee
2001 21 Dion Woods
2002 1 Paul Medhurst
2003 9 Graham Polack

Or if you have a moratorium and then hide any good 15-16-17 and 18 year old in the Bush league reserves out of the eyes of the rest of the competition this could be you

1997 3 Bowen Lockwood
1997 4 Michael Wilson
1997 7 Brendon Lade
1997 21 Nathan Eagleton
1998 7 Warren Tredrea
1998 9 Nick Stevens
1998 13 Stuart Dew
1999 19 Matthew Bode
2000 10 Chad Cornes
2000 22 Josh Carr
2001 17 Brent Guerra
2002 13 Shaun Burgoyne
