Fox Footy this afternoon
Carlton def Brisbane by 13 goals
12 mths later they won their 2nd flag and we won or earned our first spoon.

The earth turns

We will rise again
Hope it comes soon

Just how good was Mark Porter that afternoon?!?!

Absolutely killed it in the ruck and up forward.

That trade for McKernan was easily one of the worst trades we have ever done.

It's been stated several times that the belting we handed out that day (I was in Canberra that day whatching North smash Port....got to sledge Wanganeen) was the spur that provided the impetus for Brisbane to get going and play hard committed footy.

Same could be said for us belting Melbourne by 98 points back in 2000.

From that game forward they went on a huge winning streak and ended up in the Grand Final.

Come on PJ, give us some credit, we have done far worse than that.

Don't think so.

We've done som pretty shitty trades, but this was by far one of the worst. Porter was starting to establish himself as a very good ruckman and absolutley loved the place. He didn't want to go, but for some reason Britts and Elliott had a boner over Corey McKernan and Porter was used to get him to Carlton.

I defy anyone to name one trade worse than the Porter/McKernan debacle.

WORST TRADE EVER

Not sure if I agree with those against the Porter-McKernan trade. Aside from McKernan winning a B&F, here are the average per game statistics for the two players for 2002-2003 (both played 41 games during the period):

Porter: 3.1 kicks, 2.7 handballs, 1.4 marks, 0.2 goals, 1.9 tackles, 12 hitouts

McKernan: 6.8 kicks, 2.8 handballs, 3.8 marks, 1.5 goals, 1.0 tackles, 9.2 hitouts

On top of that, we got Teague (another B&F winner) and Morrell in exchange for McKernan, whereas North got nothing for Porter.

Porter played a couple of handy games for Carlton, primarily his debut against Essendon*, but otherwise was average at best.

Devonport was 4 years before that. Livo and Cranage for Hamill.

Come on guys, Porter was a good honest toiler, nothing more. I loved him, but he was very limited and isn't playing AFL anymore for a reason. McKernan never reached the heights he did in his first stint at North, but he was a better player for us than Porter.

Our hand was forced with Hamill. And at the end of the day we got a top four pick for him. Good trade if you ask me.

And putting the Teague/Morrell thing in to justify the McKernan/Porter is crap. The Mckernan trade is being jusged as a stand alone. The fact that Loopy Laidley allowed us to get out of it two years later is irrelevant.

Here's a few names that spring to mind, although I'll leave it my more learned colleagues on here to work out how they ended up at Carlton...

Stephen O'Reilly
Michael Mansfield
Sean Charles
Mick McGuane

It's nice to know that someone out there agrees with me.. Never rated Porter at all.

Getting peahearted McKernan was bad enough, the fact we gave away our 1st round draft pick in the 'super' draft along with Porter, was even worse.

Both Porter & McKernan never played a senior game after 2004. Nil all draw IMO.

Someone did an analysis a few months back on what O'Reilly actually cost us in terms of picks and penalties but IIRC it was about 9 picks and $920,000 all up. I reckon that was the worst trade of all time.

And Porter was a GOP, nothing more. McKernan was turd but at least he had a crack and earnt his cash for that year he was here.

Obviously he wasn't a superstar ruckman/player, but it was the principle of the trade.

Porter wanted to be at Carlton and was playing some good football. Matthew Allan was pretty much playing on one foot and was playing some shit footy. It should have been Matthew Allan that was traded for McKernan, not Porter.

Remember the Nth Melbourne game the following year? Allan was a late withdrawal with fractured foot and we pretty much had no ruck for the day. How convenient that the day Porter comes up against his old side, the ruckman we chose to keep over him was not available to play.
