AFL commission trading future draft picks

All clubs will be allowed to trade future draft picks in this year's trade period after the AFL Commission approved the move at a meeting on Tuesday.

The decision was ratified by the commission, which was understood to be persuaded by the need to introduce more mechanisms to help lowly clubs rebuild more quickly.

The AFL executive sought feedback from clubs over several proposals for trading future picks before presenting options to the commission. It is understood the clubs overwhelmingly supported the change to extend future trading to all clubs.

Murphy is the only A grader with elite capabilities we have on the list. You can maybe replace Henderson and Yarran's output but let's not get fanciful with trades and draft picks.

Don't agree. Murphy is a good player and I like the way he goes about it but IMO there is nothing elite about him.

The question I have is if we don't look at trading and draft picks to rebuild our list what do we do?

People keep saying we can't trade this player or that player because we need them. I reckon that is BS. Look where we are, our whole list is poor. We seem to overrate our players.

Whatever we think Murphy Gibbs Kruezer Jamison Casboult Thomas Tuohy Bell will still be at the club next year. There is enough experience there to lead the next generation. With Cripps Graham Buckley Docherty Holman Jaksch Smith Giles all emerging we now need to add as many potential young elite players to our list and IMO the only real way is through the draft and by giving something up.

We may be able to sneak an Aish with a pick 20ish but that's rare.

3-4 Top 25 picks (used properly) along with 2-3 others can give our list a whole different look.

3 years of some smart tough decisions and we can be back up the top. I hope.

If we tend to overate our players, then how do we trade them and get what we perceive as good value for them? Lets not even go down the track of considering our draft strike rate. Lets say trade murphy for pick 10 ish, then pick up a Lucas. Yeah right. Great deal. Its all a lay down misere in discussions like this, that we will all of a sudden be able to hit the draft out of the ball park. But the reality is, it is not that easy. There is no quick fix. A rebuild should happen methodically over 4-5 draft seasons, and must be accompanied by the requisite drafting competance. Like supplementing our existing core players with young skilled highly motivated and determined men. Dont trade our top players to scratch an itch, trade them when they are being chased and we can get overs for them. If our better players are struggling it is hardly the time to trade them.... When we will get the least value fir them. Surely a better strategy is to get the best out of them by developing our list properly and giving them some support. Not everyone can be a Judd or GAJ

Article on the age suggests richmond are interested in yarran (if they don't get treolar) - http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/r ... io7d0.html

assuming current ladder positions and no PPs, the tigers first round would be pick 14 :)

Would take that at the moment. Probably with a double shot of whiskey and some regret, but I'd take it.

Now let's see, assuming Hendo and Yarran go.... adding them to the list below

Betts
Garlett
Robinson
Jacobs
Grigg
Laidler
Waite

means there will be 9 players we've let go in the last 5 seasons making reasonable to outstanding contributions at other clubs..... And we've gotten jack shit for them.

Now wonder I've lost the passion for my team and club....

Let's give them all away, how about Crippa too?

Almost looks like Footscray of the 70's and 80's.

^^ This^^

Trading players for picks only works if you do well with the picks you receive in return. Using the picks on the likes of Bootsma, Lucas, Mccarthy etc only sets you further back. Excuse me if recent history hasn't filled me with confidence that we wont throw those picks away on far worse than what we trade off.

Since when was pick 14 considered "jack shit"? :?

Fear of failure won't do much to improve our playing list.

That Grigg guy goes alright. Maybe we can get him and pick 14 for Yaz? :-P

But seriously, Yaz is the cream. He's been fun to watch but he's not going to deliver us anything with the players around him. If Richmond thinks they're ready for some "top up class", they a) are kidding themselves, and b) will have to pay for it.

Pick 14 and Corey Ellis for Yarran. I'd say Menadue but he's a HBF and we have, like, 27 of those.

Are we going to recruit all these 'cream' players at once when we're empirically satisfied that we have all the 'blue-chip' investments in place for a premiership?

At least tigers are showing what a bit of good coahing, player buy in and adherence to plan can achieve...their list isnt much better than ours
