I think that the most unknown premiership player for Carlton is Sam Smart.

Most people would not remember that he played in Carlton's 1997 night premiership team.

I know a lot of people don't rate night/pre-season flags, but it all adds to the trophy cabinet - so i rate it.

Essendon* rate their night flags too - if you go to their hall of fame you will see their night flag trophies hold pride of place.

Trivia question - can anyone remember what number he wore..

Clue -.it was one of Carlton's most famous numbers.

I can't think of a more unknown premiership (pre-season or day) player than Sam Smart. Can't remember how many games he played but it can't be more than a handful. Maybe Jarusa knows?

Apologies to the more seasoned posters, but I never heeard much about Paul Hurst from the 72 team. How long was he at the club for & why didn't he kick on? Was he the Richard Dennis/Brad Pearce of his decade?

Camelboy - good one... yes i was thinking of Herman, how did you know?

Harmes37 - yes... Paul Hurst .. i am trying to remember him. He had curly hair... no that was o'connell.

Hurst did play well in the 72 grand final from memory. I think he was a half-back flanker wasn't he? I might try and find out on hursty.

yeah, paul hurst was a left-footed HBF in the 72 premiership side. would've played in 73 GF too.

one of the long line of bendigo boys. he did have long, curly hair.

David Parkin insisted we drafted Smart.
Shane O tried to tell him he wouldnt be good enough in Victoria.
Parkin said "He is a big body.. draft him!"
We drafted him.. played one game in the firsts.. but ended up a doctor.

I think he featured in an alleged drug related (marijuana) criminal offence a few years ago - I believe he was convicted but I threw in an "alleged" just in case. :wink:

Going back to the topic I think the 1987 Premiership side features more "good ordinary" players than any other premiership side in living memory (2005 aside

Wes Lofts was quoted as saying after the 87 flag that it was the most ordinary Carlton Side ever to win a Premiership. :wink:

His best assets were his creativity and his disposal. He loved to run off his opponent and always used the ball well. He was a solid contributor in the '72 GF and I had the privilege of celebrating that win with him - many, many times.
I believe he is now living and working in the Albury-Wodonga area.

Yes, good post Pats Fitzrick.. have you ever tried to say Pats Fitzrick 10 times really quickly... it is hard enough to write down, let alone say.

Agro, I know where you are coming from and agree in principle but i was thinking that Shane Robertson did play on Diper in two finals (86 2nd semi and the 87 g/final) I think it was Robertson... 90% sure.
but will have to check. He played on the wing i think.

There were also some great, great players in that team too.
I would rate it as one of my favourite footy memories.

- probably more folklore than fact - but there were sighs of relief all around the Carlton Coaching Box after that Grand Final win. :wink:

Given that CHF is one of the more important parts of a Premiership side what about Billie Bennett in 1968?

Played 11 games for the Blues only.Promised a lot but did'nt quite deliver.

Sam Kekovich's big brother Brian played for us in the same game and kicked 4 of our 7 goals. Hardly played a game for us again - due to a back injury.

Interesting point in that game - it is the only time that the winner of the Grand Final has kicked less goals than the loser. :wink:

It is your description that will be used, so when I put it in I can cite you as the author if you like. Somthing along the lines of 'Information supplied courtesy of .....' or something like that.

Will have a look in the records for some Carlton players who only played in a few games including a premiership.
