A character reference from Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and media advocate Waleed Aly persuaded the AFL tribunal that Bachar Houli was of such character that they halved his penalty for knocking out Carlton's Jed Lamb.

Houli was banned for two weeks with the tribunal declaring "it is very rare that we come across an example of such a fine character ... and on that basis it's a two week penalty."

The AFL's counsel Andrew Woods argued for a four week ban which he said was the starting point for the tribunal in any case of an intentional strike with high impact to the head. Houli's lawyer MIchael Tovey QC argued that on account of his character Houli deserved to serve only two weeks.

Houli argued that he had carelessly struck Lamb but had not intended to strike him as he was a peaceful and religious person and was shocked to find himself charged with intentionally hurting another person.

*************

The tribunal received glowing references from Mr Turnbull, Dr Aly and AFL diversity manager Ali Fahour which were argued should mitigate the claim he had intended to strike.

He won't be available this week. VFL tribunal.

Wouldn't have got a look in anyway BV. I know that and suspect you do as well

From the coach: KJ played as a defender, and needs to narrow his focus to a defensive mindset and defending hard when he needs to. He found some ball in the back half but didn’t impact the game offensively.

Doesn't sound like he deserved a look in this week regardless. He's just not cut out for AFL football. I know that a suspect you do as well.

No you don't know whether he's cut out for AFL cause he's played 1 game of AFL for us...
Everything else is just speculation

Yeah true. I was just muckin around with that bit playin on what the previous poster said.

But for the record he's played 7 games for the Blues for a return of 1 goal and an average of 9 possessions. Prior to that he played 7 senior games for GWS for 2 goals and an average of 9.5 possessions.

Jones is proof that anything is possible. You don't get on a list without talent.

Houli gets a character reference from PM Cayman and just two weeks.

And Gibbs and Betts drown kittens for fun, I suppose?

Absolute joke.

Bit harsh on Jed
I thought he was playing well.

The Houli suspension should've have been a pretty easy case for the punishment guidelines - clearly it's head high, clearly it's maximum impact. I suppose the only question is whether or not it was intentional. I reckon he turned his head enough to be able to see exactly where his target was, so I'd grade it very f-ing intentional. I don't see the crime in this case as a heck of a lot different to Barry Hall king hitting that WC guy. Obviously the penalty is.

Can't help but wonder if the politics of our time played a role in the sentence.

The AFL have appealed the suspension. Hopefully he gets his due wack.

I'd hope not, otherwise the league needs to replace the tribunal members now.

The AFL gets allot of whacks for looking brushing things under the carpet, but good to see that they have taken a stand on this cheap shot.

I honestly believe that Houli is a genuine person and of good character, but in this case his good record has been incorrectly applied. He received a discount on the penalty and a second discount on the good record & guilty plea.

well actually turnbull didn't give a character reference in relation to the tribunal hearing - would you believe that Richmond used a reference in a speech totally unrelated to the tribunal charge without seeking approval from the PM's office; and unsurprisingly the PM is not happy.
but then what would you expect from a dog club that harboured neil balme - remember Geoff southby and the 1973 GF?

Deserves 4 weeks. If Gibbs gets 2 for laying the perfect tackle on Gray last year, then this is 4. Character means nothing. You do the crime you do the time.

Yep. Richmond hatred aside, it sets a terrible precedent for the tribunal to start judging players' worth as human beings. As someone else said earlier, Gibbs copped weeks for a legitimate tackle with an unfortunate outcome, even though he has a good disciplinary record - so are we to deduce from the sentence that Gibbs is a cauliflower? By all means take into account a player's history of on-field indiscretions, but the rest is out of bounds (deliberate!).

Kingy and Sellers both think 5/6 weeks.
Maybe drop to 5 or 4.
I still think 4 is likely. Pleased if 5 or 6.
Terrible incident.

When you've got people like Nathan Brown saying the penalty was way too lenient you know the tribunal has done [REDACTED] up.

We know what to do next time a Carlton player is reported. Just get a celebrity Carlton supporter (Andy Lee perhaps?) to say what a great bloke you are; sentence reduced.
