Can you remember any games where we were very very very unlucky to lose a game, perhaps due to an umpiring decision, Carlton mistake or freak of nature?

The last two I can think of are when Riccardi kicked that goal after the season against us, but I can't remember many of the details, and last year against the Pies when the Pies just arc-ed up after so many ridiculous frees went against them.

I'd like to hear some Carlton-related stories for an article idea on the site.

I've got plenty ... so much angst I'll just punch the ocmputer screen!!

some of the more recent ones include:

* That Riccardi goal after the siren when Wiggo touched the ball on the mark but it was awarded anyway - would have been one of the best last quarter comebacks in recent times if we had held on

* Game against West Coast at Optus a few years ago when we were pinged for deliberate in the dying moments and lost (we hadn't won for a while and it really hurt)

* 2004 against North at the G when 'our' Daniel Wells kicked the goal from the boundary (even though he wasn't the closest player to the infringement). Free-kick awarded against Houlas for out of bounds when the ball was already out of play and the umpire guessed the decision despite not seeing it clearly

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Round 17, 2001 against Hawthorn at the MCG when Ben Dixon kicked the winning goal after the siren. We outplayed them for most of the day but were inaccurate whereas Hawthorn took their chances.

And a year earlier against the Bulldogs at Optus Oval late in the season, where they won by less than a goal, I think Trent Bartlett scored the winning goal very late on. The Bulldogs had 26 free kicks to 9 that day, including a 19-2 free kick lead at half time! Matty Lappin had 7 frees against him.

Was actually paid to someone else then they kicked to Wells, went about 5m and was paid. Then after the siren the Roos players ran across the mark and should've technically been pinged 50m which would have put Campo within kicking distance.

Probably the most ridiculous, unfair loss of my time, by far beating the 'Goldspink' game and Riccardi farce

Can't remember the year but the game was Carlton v West Coast with scores level with less than a minute to go. The ball was close to the boundary deep into the Eagles forward line and umpire Goldspink paid delibirate out of bounds against Hickmont. The Optus Oval crowd went ape droppings at the decision and the Eagles player slotted a point through just before the siren went.

Beaumont and Culpitt gang tackled a player (was it BArtlett?) about 20m out and it got paid as in the back....rediculous free and resulted in the goal that put the dogs in front and won the game.

VFL Park. Warren Ralph (?) kick after the siren. Dubious call from the goal umpire

The match at PP where we lost to Bitchmond by 1 point (97? 98?), and missed out on the finals that year by that 1 point.
Closest i've come to crying because of a footy match.

• Against Hawthorn at MCG, 2001, when we FAFfed around with the ball too much, and turned it over, only for Dixon to take the mark with seconds to go. His kick was never going to miss.

2 weeks in a row those matches. Wiggo was the bloke pinged against WC as well. Mist have killed his confidence something savage. :(

2000 QF v Melbourne - shits me even to this day. We were miles in front before Brad Green and Cam Bruce decided to turn it to 11.

Queen's Birthday 1990 vs Melb. Down by close to 50 points at half time, we dominated the second half, but kicked inaccurately (my beloved Sticks being the chief culprit unfortunately :( ) & lost by 5 points. Would have been an awesome win.

A couple of late 90s Ess matches where they chipped to each other & milked the clock at the end also come to mind

Another is against Haw at Waverley in 89. They finished premiers whilst we were shite that year. Yet funnily enough we stuck with them that day. We had all the momentum in the final qtr but what does Dunstall do? Kicks his 100th, bringing thousands of kids onto the arena, halting play, & stuffing up our run. I think we went down by 5 points - again, would have been a sensational win.

I've seen so many after the siren losses going back to that North Melbourne game at Princes Park in 1976 and Malcolm Blight's 80 metre torpedo punt goal ( ), looking at that game again on the video's I would say it was lucky to be 55 metres - but lets not get in the way of a romantic story hey Michael "Jesaulenko you beauty" Williamson. 8)

But going back to after the siren losses - I reckon we have had more than our fair share - going back to at least that game, over to you Footy Geek.

I'm almost certain it was paid out on the full. Fullmont & I were sitting right in front of it & saw Hicky toe poke it over. What spins me out is how the umpire saw when Hicky pretty much had his back to the ump!

vs Essendon* a few years back. SOS took a courageous mark on the last line of defence, when kicking back in from defence the ball shaved the back of the post and was picked up by an Essendon* player . I think we lost by a point that day...

*edit - to explain better*

We would like to take this one, Molsey, if that's OK.

Horrible, close, losses. Is there anything more horrible than a close loss? Perhaps when the game is wrenched from your hands like a lollipop from a spoiled child? This is what we could write about:

For some of us at the Buzz, we can't help but think of:

*versus Collingwood in '84 when Warren Ralph's kick after the siren to tie the game was ruled a point although it looked pretty darn straight to most people at the ground.

*versus Melbourne in the Preliminary final in '88 when we came back from 6 goals down at three quarter time to get within a couple of kicks, then Ricky Jackson's set shot from 30 metres out clearly hit the post but was ruled a goal, and that was all she wrote

We would like to come up with a top 5 Worst Horrible Close Losses for the site. Would anyone care to opine their Worst 5?

ps While you're writing, could you please remember the year or thr Round. We are happy to ask Jarusa for assistance but we're fast running out of favours with the Footy Geek.

Love & losses,

The Buzz

Remember that game very well. It was actually 27-9. Dogs got a dream run that day, but to beat a full strength Carlton at Optus, who were fresh off 13 wins on the trot, and with our entire spine out injured, it was a remarkable win and one of Teflon Terry's best ever match day coaching displays. To isolate Garlick one-out and kick 6 goals out of 11 was brilliant coaching. He was on McKay from memory, who hardly ever got towelled up like that in his career.

Not a really close one, but an elimination final thrown away vs North ar VFL park in 85. Demetriou may have even been playing in that one. We dominated possession, kicked point after point & North goaled on the rebound - nightmare........end of Parkin as coach the aftermath of that result.
