Bluebagger Dreams

Oh how sadly we turn,
How the bright blue dreams
of yesterday swiftly
become today’s tirade.
Hope is such a flimsy aside,
a mistress cast away in the cold.
This club we once stood behind,
those flags that still flutter in my mind,
the heroes - how silent
they have grown, the grass echoes
no more to their leaps and passes.
It sleeps, tired under the onslaught
of ever increasing demands -
this is a game no more,
a club less than it was,
a time of yearning -
Will what was ever be again?
Will the giant awaken?

Children play games,
unknowingly chanting the verses
that once urged us on
but now irk us
as the dust from all the 'what weres'
blows into our faces.

Now we seek bones,
starve ourselves,
devour those things
that once served us -
Where is our pride?
Where is our strength?

In the old times
I stood with dad
on a wobbly tower of cans
and screamed our glory
for the world to hear.
Now I shun newspapers
and remember only
what has been lost.

Great piece, Dannyboy.

Pain is the overriding emotion these days when it comes to Carlton - but just seeing that guernsey again in The Age sports section yesterday restores my hope. I have that picture of Lappo, stevo and others on the front of the fridge.

Have you ever seen anything more majestic than the mighty CFC monogram on the navy blue guernsey... what a beautiful legacy for future generations.... i hope.

One positive is ... at least we won some silverware in 2005.

Our great rival- the Richmond footy club - hasn't won any silverware AT ALL since 1980...
