Notes from Smorgon's press conference, as aired on SEN…

Quote:
Thanks Ian Collins for his wonderful contribution to the club.

Big match on Friday, wants all members to be there, looking to a big performance from aspiring and new young players. Rebuilding of young team is exciting to watch.

Wants to develop an elite tranining facility at MC Labour Pak, hopes that an announcement can be made in the next few months.

Membership approx 25K, down on last year, confident this can be lifted.

CFC and AFL relationship is good. Independent review being done by the AFL of Carlton's finances. Tough decisions for the board once report comes in.

Social club and football club merger is mving forward and transferring of assets and liabilities has been approved by both boards. This process will be underway shortly. Sad in many ways, but it's the sign of the times and the football club will take over in due course.

Very, very proud to be in this position. Thanked the board for his election.

Biggest priority as his Presidency is to see the team winning games, supporting Denis and his team with the youth development and providing elite training facility and any assistance to support the football department to ensure the team is winning games.

Content with Denis' 3 year contract and very happy to support him.

Collo not at the meeting because he formally resigned in writing on Saturday, his letter was tabled tonight.

Collo's position will be filled, they will be seeking to announce a new board member within the month.

I have to say, from what you can garner from a radio interview, he seemed quite confident and personable. Like dannyboy, I hope it is a case of cometh the hour cometh the man, and am prepared to give him a go.

yep. sounded reasonable.

and I will uncross my fingers any day now 8)

as much as I and that overweight bloke with Chicken Little syndrome may argue he is usually on the money in his decriptions of the board.... I pray he is wrong and Smorgan can be what we need to take us to another level.

I always thought Ian Rice was a boring fart

According to SEN Collo hasn't even turned up to the meeting!

Apparently some bloke called Ted Kunkel is interested in running for the board, he was the CEO of Foster's Group Limited.

:?:

Fosters are no longer sponsoring the grand prix. He can have my vote if he can arange 5 mill a year for the club.

I guess with Kernahan and Valimorbida having just faced re election, they are safe for 3 years? Maybe that is a factor in their appointment.

Congrats to all concerned - may they become known as the group that lead us to glory.

at least he said all the things that I would have hoped he said. Im looking forward to a period of renewal and growth.

I also hope that Patrick Smith now has one less reason to dredge up the draft picks in some newspaper article now that Collo is behind us.

Unfortunately, Im not sure whether he wont try to find some kind of new warped and twisted angle to satisfy his pathological need to hate Carlton.

I have to say that I would hope his biggest priority would be to get us back in the black, so I hope that statement is just pandering to the members who haven't resigned to try and get them back on board.

It should be the footy departments biggest priority to get us back winning games and Smorgon is right to support them, but surely it's not his biggest priority.

steve, I interpreted his comments as being more in the line of, a) we'll support the coaches and players and b) we'll do everything we can as a board to help them win games. So if that's overseeing a new training facility, or ensuring our finances are back in shape then he wants to do it.

That's why football clubs exist isn't it … to win premierships.

Wont be long now...

Actually Bruce tried to talk Collo into staying as president for another year..but Coloos mind had already been made up....

Smorgon and all his VPS wouldnt have had more clout than Bruce to stop it.

He wanted to entrust Collo with his baby ..not the others

So the new president and the VPs arent that powerful in the whole scheme of things when it all gets boiled right down...

I know what Lee has done for the club.. i definitely know what collo has done... I know what MAthieson has done.. Valmorbida has even kicked in a few bucks....i wanna know what the others have done...???

Josh???

This morning on SEN, Smorgan would not be interviewed, with Andrew Maher (a Carlton supporter) saying that Smorgan had told SEN that he was not doing interviews.

If this is true, and I think Maher wouldn't be telling porkies, then what the hell is going on? At a time when our membership numbers could best be described as pathetic, surely Smorgan should be out on the hustings spruiking our club with as much energy as he can muster.

The selection of his deputies has me sharing Synbad's concerns. It seems only symbolism can be the reason for Kernahan's elevation, and Valmorbida looks to be shoring up his position.

Collins not turning up for the board meeting yesterday tells me that there is a bad odour around the committee at the moment, and I'm far from convinced that Smorgan is the person for the job.

Youd think if you just won the presidency you would be on the front foot letting members know that you have positive energy to share with the club.

Boy , is this guy a mistake....

The good bit is Sticks and a herd of VPs wont save him when it gets to the crunch.

There is nothing i hate more than people chewing off the fat of others and laying claim when theyre have done little to nothing in the broader scheme of things.
