Is the problem not our midfield or at least our midfielders' inability to defend?
The ball comes down with no pressure and uncontested - nothing a defender can really do.
What shits me is the ball so often falls into the hands of the oppositions' defence due to poor delivery.
YES. People are starting to see beyond what happens inside the forward 50.
Collingwood player running the ball towards the 50 in space... is this Thornton's fault? HELL NO.
You look the other way, is the reason why Stevens doesn't hit Fevola lace out purely the fault of Stevens' skills? More often than not, no. Stevens would probably get run down due to stopping in shock if he got a decent shepard as he streams towards the 50.
Our players are always having to evade the opposition and instead of being protected they have to dish it off to a bloke who is sagging off and running forward like a headless chook.
These are skills taught at the most basic levels of footy, if Pagan wasn't reminding players to do them he would have been sacked in his second or third week at the club.
If we are to play a contested brand of footy because our players are either incapable or unwilling to run into space of create space for other players to run into to receive the ball and dispose cleanly to the forward line then we need to protect the blokes carrying the ball when we can. We need to work in numbers when in possession, which conversely may create some space.
So let's not go shooting down the defense, so much as the mids who need others to flood back because they won't pay attention to their man, yet cough up the ball when in possession because they won't work for each other (as a unit).
